Never assume anything. I just now realized that Arthur Sullivan's Strephon (Iolanthe), an "Arcadian shepherd," had a Classical origin.

Moving right along (but not too far) -

Google has something to say about everything

This one’s about Arcadia, from the sixteenth century.

And this one seems to be a previous incarnation of Strephon the Arcadian shepherd, done by Gilbert & Someoneelse ten years before Iolanthe.

"Strephon" means "lover"? Or was I just skimming too fast?

From Iolanthe -

STREPHON: A shepherd I -
ALL: A shepherd he!
S. Of Arcady -
ALL: Of Arcadee!
S. Betrothed are we!
ALL: Betrothed are they -
S. And mean to be -
ALL: Espoused to-day!

.....as did I.
But we may have hit another impasse.

ANACONDA

A-->E

CANONADE - a noisy unceasing bombardment with repetitive church music (typically by Pachelbel)

(see rant, and then rantidote )

Maybe that should be "They shall beat their swords into refreshing drinks"?
