On the radio this morning the announcer said that "the quiz will be right next."

right nextSeems to be the 4th adverbial meaning in the A-H entry ( link). It's use in the book is right next to me seems uncontroversial. Think of it as a variant of It's coming right up. Next was the superlative form of nigh whose comparative form became near.
