Thanks to tsuwm's reference to Michael Quinon's page on shaggy dogs from this post:
http://wordsmith.org/board/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wordplay&Number=14808
I was able to make an earlier citation than that recorded in the OED for the phrase "shaggy dog story". This citation, the 1/14/43 daily strip of the Barnaby comic strip, has been forwarded to the OED by Mr. Quinon in my name and he has sent me their acknowledgement of my contribution.

Kewl!! That's just aaahsim!

Well done, as soon as I sell a kidney or three, I'll put down a deposit on a copy of the OED. It will be worth it to see an ayleur's name in it.

I doubt if they'll mention me by name, but if you see 1/14/1943 (or 14/I/1943), Barnaby comic strip, Mr O'Malley "I might have known it, m'boy! Worse and worse!... He's telling Shaggy Dog Stories!" you can say, "I know who told them about that one."

... hymns of praise for our Faldage.

Now praise we all our well-beloved Faldage,
Whose well-manuréd pastures make for well-dig-
Ested ayleuritic peroration ...
Not least of all an OED citation!

(OK, OK, it was the best I could do with "citation", off the top of me noodle.)

regards, and congrats, lusy

Maximum 'gratters, old chap, for an absolutely spiffing performance.

I nominate Faldage for the very first of the prestigious AWAD AWArDs for achievement beyond the posts.

And with due respects to tsuwm for aiding and abetting him.

Aw, shucks, guys. I didn't expect such an outpouring.

All seriousness aside, I can't think of another board that I know of that would recognize the import of such a distinction.

Well, I guess any board with a few commercial types on it would recognise the import of exports
