I find it interesting that in many competitions, in the US, a blue ribbon only marks the entry as above average; Grand Champion ribbons are purple, and then there is reserve champion, before one reaches down to blue.

Champion and reserve champion sound like animal show terms. Maybe the merely above average become cordon bleu rather than earning a blue ribbon??

Apperently a purple ribbon is also one of what I found are "awareness ribbons". And there is a blue one as well.
