Test your brain.

Does the girl spin counterclockwise or clockwise?

If you see her wearing leotards and spinning to the right then you are a liberal pinko or a woman.

If you see the naked girl spinning to the left then you are a red-blooded American male even if you are a woman who lives in Europe and likes to knit.

If you see her spinning bothways you live in California or New Hampshire or Vermont.

Surely not both ways at the same time. I live in liberal pinko New York. In the red-blooded American part of New York. In a liberal pinko county in New York. In a good red-blooded American township in New York.

Ha! that's real funny. At first I saw her spinning clockwise, then replacing my focus she started spinning counterclockwise.

Now can I see her spin both ways at command and in leotards or naked at wish. So what's the verdict, Scientific Spinmaster?

Quote:
Surely not both ways at the same time. I live in liberal pinko New York. In the red-blooded American part of New York. In a liberal pinko county in New York. In a good red-blooded American township in New York.

If you stare long enough you'll see her spin both ways at the same time and do a somersault with it.

(I'll stay out of an eventual next hogwash. I can do no good there. So I give up, leave it to you old gang)

You can really make her do a regural left right movement like a ballet dancer or a - left right, full turn ,right left. Be a choreographer. I would say neat!.

She's spinning to the right during half of her rotation and to the left during the other half and it doesn't matter whether she's spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Oh, oh, my bad. The test doesn't determine whether you are a good guy or a pinko. This is a test to discover whether your brain is mostly circuited on the left or on the right.

Below are some traits that are peculiar to the left or the right side of the brain .

You see her spinning counter-clockwise <--

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS

uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe

You see her spinning clockwise -->

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS

uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking

Heaven help me. I test on both sides of the street.

And regardless of which way she's spinning her pony-tail is leading rather than trailing. She's being dragged around by her pony-tail!

Ah Grasshopper, you approach the truth but then run away.
Yes her spin is both to the left and to the right. But now, betsy bug, you must explain what causes the illusion of the change in direction of her spin.

Hint: Look at the spinning girl through Einstein's eyes.

Einstein, Schmeinstien. The question is not what causes the illusion of the change of direction of her spin. but what causes the illusion of a direction at all.

Faldage, Faldage, Faldage. If there is percieved movement at all it must be directional. All movement is directional. Change in form is what causes the silhouetted girl (girl to be sure) to appear to turn. But the direction of her turn is Einstonian-Schmeistonian, that is, the direction of movement is relative to the viewer.

Get in bed, Faldage. Now rotate your left foot counterclockwise. Now look at the shadow of your rotating foot on the far wall. See? It is rotating counterclockwise too.
Ok, keep rotating your foot and twist your body and head untill you are looking back at your rotating foot. Yes, now your foot is rotating clockwise but when you turn head and look at the shadow of your foot on the far wall it still rotates counterclockwise.

Now unfold yourself and ask yourself why does the silhouetted girl have a foot shadow?

After about 20 minuites you will say "Ah Ha!" and then you will smile and shout " Milo! You magnificient basta...I mean, Milo! I read your book."

So Mr. one stone Schmone stone, why is her pony tail leading irregardles of whether or not she's spinning in your tiny little red-blooded Amerikan brain or my tiny little great-nephew of the erstwhile head of the CPUK brain?

Knitter answers: Pony tail is too close to the central vertical axis, head has no effect. For turns ,shifts and regular shifts focus loosely on more outward details (hands, elbows),shift your focus slightly all the time; observe and do not think,(if one can manage that)it's easyly trainable. I may assume to much, but it works. When you focus on the head she keeps turning one way.

Yes, I'm fond of optical illusions.

My apologies, I focused on only one misleading visual trick while the instigators of the twirling girl included several.

Yes, I approached the truth and but then turned away smug.

Now I see that the illusion works because the human mind tries to transform the visual odd into the visual familiar to facilitate infomation processing.

I only focused on the Coriolis effect of the circling i.e. when the shadow of the girl's foot turned clockwise I corrected for the girl's apparent motion and saw her turning counter-clockwise. But it turns out that the devious plan of this study was to disrupt conceptualizations by changing "several" key visual clues as she spun.

I promise I will never be wrong again.

okay, I focused really, really hard on the outstretched leg, and for the briefest moment she switched from clockwise to anticlockwise. and I mean briefest! I think it was a trick of the mind.

This computer is slower and she mves in pieces, by squinting, talking myself through it and trying really hard I can make her switch but only when her foot is at the extreme right on the page.

A lot of work for the result.

It is a trick of the mind. Maybe you and Zed tried too hard.
Keep your eyes shifting all the time. You need not focus on one part. Sooner the contrary. Shift eyes till you turn the movement.
Concious level low.The left-right-left shift is a bit of work and a bit harder to hold.
That would be phase 2.

Boy, does this "non-word thread" (as tsuwm calls it) need closure. What began as a sophisticated intellectual exercise has now become a spate of one-word grunts.

But first, for those of you with buttoned-down minds who can't see the girl turn but in one direction, let me ask a question that will almost blind you with its brilliance. Ready?

Why the heck is the dancing girl's foot shadow shown in the depiction?

Hint: It is not for Art that her foot shadow is shown.

BranShea: You are an accomplished artist of note in watercolor circles. Please go back and look at the relationship between the shadow and the turn. Then come back here and explain the relationship and the effect to us and then we can all go home.

I returned a few times to the dancer just for amusement.
I then focussed on the foot shadow and noticed that focussing on the foot shadow made the direct steady switch (there must be a better word for steady switch: on- of, left- right, much easier.
But it is a mind trick. I'm a true born left hander who forced herself to write righthanded and use right-hand tools to be like all the other kids.

watercolor has not much to do with this.(OK that was just the hint) The shadow does. (I do categorize to the red + blue brainfunction items, though taken with a grain of salt.)
( from today's quote: All individuals are a bundle of contradictions -- )

The foot shadow I think enables you to imagine (see) three dimensionality and gives a hold to manipulate the silhouette.
Also I think it is the rythm of the foot shadow that makes quickstep-reverse easier.

Okay ,okay, okay .
Look at her heel. Just one split second before it touches the shadow you can put her into a perpitual switch movement.
Specially when you move your head a little with the movement.

Helen! !Of troy!I've found my other obsession too!
It is amazing how eye and mind work together. She can do a whole circle back and fro and a half circle back and fro.

Hmm.

Say Shea, maybe you've been doing too many still life paintings for the past twenty years to notice, but the moving shadow which represents the dancer's extended leg only moves from the viewer's right to his left.

Where, relative to the viewer and the dancer, is the light source?

That's right, but that's because the foot part sinks under the lower frame line when it moves from left to right.(If they had not cut it off you would see that it's all perfectly mirrored and the source of light is (imo) of no importance. They suggest counterlight, but quite diffused. No real light source.I'm almost sure that against a totally flat light blue background the whole thing would work as well. For you, twenty years of discovering tiny prints in dark spaces and behind frames of rock? Do you not see through the frame?

Because of the frame line you can isolate the extended foot shadow and see the visible part only moving from right to left.
But your (sorry), my mind can still see the part that moves under the frame.
And it sure moves with the figure, both ways.

But about that hogwash. Why would no one want to play the hogwash any more? The
hog is a renowned pumpkin eater.Would there be no Halloween Special? In this typical and amusing American festival I would not participate. Not give a definition nor vote. Just sit back in a lazy chair and be amused.
(like so many others)

No chance to bring the hog ghost - spirit back to life???
Tsuwm? A nice ghostie performance?

At this point I think you can forget all hope
to get this thread back to being " a sophisticated intellectual exercise".
So you'd better come up with a good ogerhunch definition.

It might have been me that you 'saw', Candy. When I rejoined the Board last week, I explored lots of threads to see what had been going on in the eight years since I was last here. I used to enjoy hogwash, back then, and hoped that it was still going on, but all I found here was an out-of-date link, so I haven't really felt that I could take part in this discussion.

I have never been Hogmaster, but I suppose I could give it a go, if there is enough interest? I do have some time to spare, these days.
