1 G = one grand = 1 thousand (thou.) dollar-bucks

pretty cryptic, though.

Oh thank-you, tsuwm.

I've been racking my brain. It's even more frustrating when you have the answer staring you in the face because you got all the answers around it.

Another word I had trouble finding was "truism" when the clue was "platitude".

In French, platitude means something that is boring or lacking originality, or a conversation strewn with banal, insignificant comments. They aren't necessarily true comments, just boring.

A truism, as I understand it, is an obvious, incontrovertible truth.

AHD defines truism as a self-evident truth. As such it could be interpreted as something that goes without saying, but which is said anyway. This sort of thing is boring and lacking in originality.

Not to mention crossword puzzle clues are sometimes a little off the mark.

M-W has it as "esp. one too obvious for mention"

FWIW, Roget's (thesaurus.reference.com) lists both platitude and truism under banality, cliche, commonplace, and maxim.

FWIW, another word for this is a 'bromide' (often taken as a sedative); also a term for a boring person.
