Ooops had my fingers on the wrong line - subject line looked like I had already finished the champagne.
I won't have access to a computer tomorrow so I'll say it now...
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

We've got a broad enough audience - we should have a rolling HNY he way they had that rolling Mozart Requiem several years ago...a lot happier reason now, at least.

Here's wishing all you good people of Awad a most prosperous and happy new year, and to you people who have me on "ignore" I wish you a...uh...new year.

Well, Milo, I wish you and everyone else here a peaceful and enriching new year ~ in whatever terms will bring each individual most happiness.

Not to be contrary, but I am mildly confused by the common practice of wishing people "Happy New Year" before the New Year has begun. Today is the Feast of Saint Sylvester of Rome. Thus it would make sense to wish people a Happy Sylvester's Day today and wait until after midnight tonight to extend New Year's greetings. Mayhaps the common (anticipatory) practice is not so much jumping the gun as it is invoking a wish FOR the New Year -- peace, happiness, prosperity, cheaper gas -- which does make sense, when offered in advance of the commencement of it.

Which part of the spinning globe are you referring to, Father? (he slurs, having had a *very jolly family gathering!)

I suppose I should return Mav's kind and jolly greeting now -- rather than wait the requisite two hours and forty five minutes -- since the lights will be out and the residents will be asleep in our house when the 2006 line passes overhead. I have a service in the morning and my sermon for the Feast of the Holy Name (formerly the Feast of the Circumcision) is done. It is getting pretty late for an aged vicar and so my greeting anticipates the astrophysical event.

Well I hope you are happy, Father Steve, like you asked I waited until after midnight to ring up my pal Andy to wish upon him a happy new year...too late. Andy had already run his F-100 pick-up truck into a chert ditch.
Some wishing, I guess, is best done premature.

Don't forget, aged vicar, a bowl of black-eyed peas and ham hocks will insure you good luck throughout 2006, so don't be surprised if the Republicans sweep the congressional elections in November.

Good luck to you I hope you win the power ball lottery.

That's just great. Want to know how I started my new year? Well, I happen to fall asleep on 23:00, and woke up at 1:00 A.M. ...so I missed the countdown. But not that I had any big plans or anything-- which is even more sad. Then my computer caught a nasty virus. Apparently it was (or is) infected with Trojan and other malicious viruses. I ran endless of anti-virus programs on my machine, and even though it seems alright now, I still have my paranoid feeling something is in there nibbling on the system. goddamnit.

Thanks eta and mav - it's good to be back! Retirement has proved to be a full time occupation so far. Problem is, when you retire you are helped to rediscover all the things you have been too busy to get done for the last ten/fifteen years!

My uncle claims that retire is short for really, really tired because everyone gives you jobs and committees "since you have so much time now"!

Thank you Connie and Jackie and mmwha mmwha back at ya.

Actually, it's not so much a "honey do list" as a guilt trip.

A realistic list only has three "things" at a time (possibly a fourth as an alternative or as a 'do-this-and-forget-the-other-three' item), no specific completion order (unless they make prerequisitive *sense) and a flexible turn-around time (ergo the realism).

Anything else would eventually be decivilized.

1. Think of important stuff to do and put it on a list.

2. Misplace list.

3. Think of important stuff to do and put it on another list.

4. Misplace other list.

5. Do important stuff.

6. Find both lists and discover how much of what one wrote down was really important enough to do in the first (or second) place.

Ko-Ko:

As someday it may happen that a victim must be found,
I've got a little list -- I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground
And who never would be missed -- who never would be missed!
There's the pestilential nuisances who write for autographs --
All people who have flabby hands and irritating laughs --
All children who are up in dates, and floor you with 'em flat --
All persons who in shaking hand, shake hands with you like that --
And all third persons who on spoiling tete-a-tetes insist --
They'd none of 'em be missed -- they'd none of 'em be missed!

Chorus of Men:

He's got 'em on the list -- he's got 'em on the list;
And they'll none of 'em be missed -- they'll none of 'em be missed!

[chorus to third verse]

...but it really doesn't matter what you put upon the list,
for they'll none of it be missed -
they'll none..of..it..be..missed!

Well how can you say you will when you won't,
Say you do, baby, when you don't?
LET ME KNOW HONEY HOW YOU FEEL,

But oh well honey don't, well honey don't,
Honey don't, honey don't, honey don't
I say you will when you won't, oh honey, don't.
