Almost every time I attempt to exit a post I get this mezz. There's no damage done, as it disappears when you click on Back. However, what are they trying to tell me

It's telling you that something in the body of that page (with the same title) has changed... in this case most likely an additional posting.

Sorry don't understand the question

However, with no intention whatever to offend, as I consider AWAD one of the very best, the continued repetition of this message is annoying, while it isn't entirely clear how one escapes from it except by repeatedly clicking on "Back" til finally it disappears. Other such sites don't use it at all

exit a post What do you mean by this, please? Close the window? Move to another thread? Add a post to a thread? Something else?

EDIT: Or--was this question another test, to see how we'd respond?

what I mean is, does it take you a while from entering the thread, until you post, or exit the thread. if you are in a thread for a long time, sometimes, the cookies can expire, or as someone else suggested, the thread can be changed by someone else.

Dale:

This has happened to me on occasion, now that I think about it. With two little kids, time is not one's own sometimes, and I find myself starting a reply only to be called away to settle a fight, open a door, close a door, or whatever.

Then fifteen or twenty minutes later I return to the 'puter and hit reply, only to receive a response about the page having expired.

I suspect it's a safety thing, since not all people will access a site from home. If I wander away from a terminal at a library, for instance, anyone can sit down and write anything at all, pretending to be me.

Also, I didn't notice when you started hanging out here, though it was fairly recently. We just underwent a sea change, going to new software for the Board. It may be that there are some things that still need tweaking.

Welcome aboard!

>anyone can sit down and write anything at all, pretending to be me.

there was a time when a standard workplace jape when discovering someone had left for a period with their desktop computer "on" was to leave a message beginning "If I were you, and I am..."

(this was eventually barred for the most part by the advent of the password protected screensaver.)

Jackie: Oh not at all. I was just registering a mild complaint implying that the message is unnecessary. Sometimes to exit it you have to click once, sometimes twice. But if you click twice when you should have clicked once, this sometimes takes you to a page you didn't want to be at.

In most all other respects, though a mite complicated than most, AWAD is a fine algorithm

yeah, the question then is, do you get the message only when you've been "in" the thread a long time, which would indicate some sort of timing thing that the forumware has, that other forumware may not have, or that the forum admin has set differently? or not?

...may I respectfully note that the message is a real nuisance and ought to be dropped at the next housekeeping...

I'm not sure where the message comes from... the board specifically or your browser. It may be possible (with some programing) to link certain page requests for old pages to the newer version of the page, but that may require a hardware upgrade to deal with all those page title translations. I respectfully submit that it is a part of this board/system that would be rather *costly to change.

dale... You'd never see them if you didn't use the "back" button!

Onward and forward!

CHARGE!!!

I'm not sure what *truly needs to be accomplished by going backward. Editing an edit? Revisiting pages pre- certain posts?

The main index link at the top is the "front door" to go to once you exit the back door which automatically locks behind you. I think they call this a "schoolhouse" style door lock!

what musick said; but sometimes that's not so helpful.

o Why do you want to go back?
- if it's to continue editing, don't do that! if you scroll down a bit you'll find an "Edit some more" box

- if it's to get past the original edit window; i.e., you really want to go back multiple pages, then right click on the back button and select the page you want from the drop-down menu.

- is there another reason to go back?

you can also use the "Index" link at the bottom of the thread (between "Previous" and "Next" to get you back to the list of threads for that category.

Thanks all for the tips. The trick of right-clicking on the Back button was a new one on me

I'm aware of the "Index," Main Index", "Next," "Previous" etc links but it's only out of sheer laziness I don't use them more since I resent the need for scrolling to access them. It is usu so much easier just to click on the "Back" button til I get where I want to be

Agreed that tweaking an algorithm is a tedious and thankless job--if not expensive too--and I wouldn't wish it on anybody just to satisfy the whim of a sluggard such as I. I had hoped that my proposal wouldn't be so difficult it performed during a routine upgrade

Dale, this just happened to me for the first time. Do you make all or most of your replies in the "Quick Reply" box? I think it really means it when it calls it quick. I usually use the reply button at the top of the most recent post, but today, I started my reply in the quick box, dilly dallied and shilly shallied and lost my whole post to the dreaded "This form is no longer valid. Please click the back button and try again." Well, of course by hitting the back button, my reply became sucked in by cyberspace and I had to start all over again.

Con: No, never. Yet I have encountered the message must be hundreds of times, and I never know how many clicks will get me out of it. Too few and it stays there. Too many and I overshoot and find myself in the wrong window. Terrible nuisance, drives one to distraction. But in other respects this site is fine business and I love it, while I realize the Director can't address everybody's gripes on account of the extreme tedium entailed by even a minor software change

Um. I have finally ventured back into Miscellany, having postponed it until I had 319 new posts here...(Had an overnight hospital stay--all ok now--and when I got back to my computer, Misc. had the largest # of new posts, so I put it off; then got caught up in holiday preparations. Whew.)

Anyway--it's possible I might be able to change the time limit, BUT one of the computer experts is going to have to tell me what to look for, probably by phone, and then I would have to get permission from Anu. This is HIS place. If he says no or doesn't reply, then I'm not doing a thing.

FWIW--I very seldom experience the Expired phenomenon; wonder if it makes a difference if you're on dial-up?

As of August 2005 the US ratio reached 60% *broadband and 40% dial up.

Jackie thank you

Anyhow there's no hurry about it. If I'm not exactly sure how many pages back I need to get, I have learned to scroll up to "Main Index" link as some have suggested. However, this move has the disadvantage of deleting the highlight from the General Topic column and so now I don't remember which one I was using and to relocate myself by trying them all one at a time

Therefore I usually simply click on the green circle "Back" til I'm where I want to go, notwithstanding ten or fifteen occurrences of "This page has expired"

Just another little housekeeping thing, and as I said, no rush, and may Bill Gates bless AWAD; and please give my best regards to Anu

I don't remember seeing this handle. does he contribute as well as run the algorithm

Excuse any typos as I'm hurrying to finish this followup before time out and the algorithm summarily deletes it

Oh, that's another problem that might well be looked into

dale, I'll answer this here, rather than in any of the other similar threads you've posted about the forums.

Anu spends almost no time here at all, and certainly not on a regular basis. he set up the forums, using commercial forumware, and then has basically left it to run on the energy of the posters, a group of about forty or fifty that post here regularly (some of us many times a day!). though Jackie is a Moderator, she wears that mantle very reluctantly, and uses her power very sparingly. (and I think wisely) there have been times of conflict, some great, some small, as in any community, but they have been weathered, and some have left, and some stayed, and new people come and go.
if there was a Moderator who cared to, yes, the forum categories and headings could be re-arranged, and culled, and combined, and posts deleted, and posters banned, and on and on. but that's not the way of it here. as far as I know, only two posters have been banned over the life of this board, and though some are brilliant, and others irritating, and others enjoying word play, and still others etymology, and others who knows, something as obscure as punnery, the board goes on, and we have come to feel very comfortable here, and to deal with all of the paradoxes, and rough edges, and torn fabric of a favorite chair.
so now I'm getting poetic, so I'll stop, but settle in and enjoy this place for whatever it is, messy floors and all...

Eta thank you for that. Thanks too for the synonym "board" for "forum" (?) Yes, this is comparatively a very tolerant crowd and yes, AWAD is a very fine board indeed

At another site a blogger submitted a followup accusing me of "persiflage." But then in a later thread, when I referred to myself as possessing that very quality, I was summarily attacked by another contributor for using obscure language

At still another, I believe it is a site called "The Mutual Recrimination Society," I was unmercifully dragged across the coals for using the terms "onshore" and "offshore," referring to leftponders v right, on the basis that it might confuse the latter, who presumably have co-opted the more equivocal terms

At a third, I contibuted many suggestions for improving the algorithm, without realizing that this site didn't use commercial software but a complex system devised by the Admin himself. So he, who himself lived in and with the forum, interpreted them as criticism and struck out at me in no uncertain terms. There's a moral here; find out who built the site before offering suggestions or improvements

In any forum there is hard core of critics who will attack you for almost anything. Fortunately they don't exercise much control over AWAD

Tho I expect to be roundly criticized for using the term "Admin" for softwaree tweaker. One just has to have a term for the guy who is in charge of, and occasionally services or updates, the algorithms

Mm--yes, we all have things that get on our nerves, like the FF said "dis" gets on his. And even worse, most people, I think, can tolerate a particular thing most of the time, but has other times the thing sends them through the roof! (Maybe they're having a bad day, like everyone in my household did today.)

And, some people are just more sensitive than others.

Another problem occurs when someone makes judgments too soon. I read this little story years and years ago, and it made such an impact that it has stayed with me:
A man and his wife were taking a drive out in the country. They drove slowly past a farmhouse on a corner lot, and could see the farmer hoeing his garden--while sitting in a wooden chair. The husband said to his wife, "Well, if that isn't the heighth of laziness: sitting down to hoe". They turned the corner and took a last look back at the man...to see that he only had one leg.

I just used quick reply on three different attempts. The first time I got the dalehileman response. (timed out)

The second and third times this message got posted (which I am now editing).

Each time I unchecked 'add signature' and 'preview reply' (adding some small delay), typed the words "quick reply", and clicked the 'continue' button.

(say dale, you are hitting the continue button?!

In Mexico it's a good idea. Lime juice is antibacterial. I think I'd rather get the bacteria myself...

A few decent Mexican beers are Bohemia, Negro Modelo and De Leon. I wouldn't want to get any lime juice in them, but if you are going to drink Corona or Tecate you deserve the limes

I saw it often enough in the ten years I lived there. Negro Modelo was bought out by Anheuser Bush??? That's NAFTA for you, I guess.

The rest, though, I'd have to agree, rank as pedestrian

dh: I believe I specified "mass-produced". you should try Summit Pale Ale, if you're ever in the Twin Cities to see the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices.

Con: I'm deeply impressed by your judgment about brews. Bohemia and Negro Modelo are indeed two of the very finest. I shall be on the lookout for DeLeon

tsu: Also shall be alert for summit

As to the lime: no, I'm a purist
Actually, a snob

dale.... next time your in Chitowne stop in at Goose Island Brewery... and you better inform me to cross the street and join you when you do!

********

I appreciate consuelo's practical "anti-bacterial" justification as I find most things lime-flavored to my liking... but it's hard enough getting beer-flavored beer.

Yep. Negra modifies the understood cerveza.

Yah, yer right. It's been a long time since I've seen one. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

León is actually the brand name I meant, not De León. It is brewed in the Yucatan, IIRC, by Cía. Cervecera del Trópico, a subsidiary of Grupo Modelo

It is a dark Munich style beer.

Drink a couple of bottles and none of the nitpicking matters anymore

consuelo, not so. Evidently there is some sort of stringent rule about the use of the term "algorithm"

But I'm looking for a suitable synonym for future followups

Well, it *is* a defined term:

l·go·rithm P Pronunciation Key (lg-rthm)
n.
A step-by-step problem-solving procedure, especially an established, recursive computational procedure for solving a problem in a finite number of steps.
