Here is a link to something I hope you'll find interesting: Chris Rollason's paper 'Why the Internet age will not accept simplified English spelling'.

In it he argues that "any attempt to alter English spelling internationally is doomed to failure for three reasons: 1) the multiplicity of native and non-native English pronunciations; 2) resistance from fear of censorship through transcription; 3) impossibility of enforcement, a factor now intensified by the inherently plural nature of the Internet."
