There are made-up words and, then again, there are made-up words. A few -- a precious few -- are worth keeping, I think.

A chum just sent me this one, which she claimed was from a contest conducted by the Washington Post:

Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease.

Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease.

I once coined the term "pornucopia" to describe a sleezy section of Manhattan near Times Square*, Father Steve. I'm sure I wasn't the first to come up with "pornucopia".

I see there is even a book entitled "Pornucopia". Some books want to be judged by their covers.

"Pornucopia is a picaresque black comedy that transgresses all bounds of everyday good taste."

* That whole area has been depornified in recent years, quite remarkably.

Times Square Roulette: Remaking the City Icon

Extract:

Sagalyn explodes five myths about the 42DP: (1) it was an overnight success, (2) Disney led the way, (3) Mayor Guiliani deserved the credit, (4) minimal public investment was needed, and (5) the private sector could have done it alone.

First, the rejuvenation of Times Square may appear to be an overnight success, but it was the result of decades of hard work by New York's politicians and public officials.

Second, "Disney got to the party just in time for the first dance".
