Connie has used the same tactic adopted by my Dad - well sort of, he hasn't been locked away yet!

On one memorable occassion he put on his syrupy sweet response to the woman caller. Lots of gushing responses about how grateful he was that she called; that he had all the time in the world to listen to her and so on.

It must have quite unsettling for the caller because she eventually hung up on him!! He and my mother were delighted at this and just about cried laughing. It only got better when the phone rang a minute or two later. Very brief call this time; the same woman but this time she only uttered one word, "Arsehole" before she hung. Talk about a win for the little people!!

There is also another way to deal with this annoyance:

In the UK, there has been a scheme called the telephone preference service since 1999. There is also a fax preference service and a mail preference service. I assume this is what has been alluded to earlier .

Since I registered I have not had a single call or fax. It used to be the faxes trying to sell me Viagra at 2am, (when I assumed that it must be someone calling telling me that a relative was ill) that annoyed me most. My mother in law broke her spectacles one-day rushing to get a call that she thought might be important. That double-glazing sales rep cost her a fortune. I hardly get any direct mail now, other than from companies that I have requested information.

So if you have any similar kind of service in your area, I would strongly recommend joining it.

...according to the Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services (ICSTIS)... complaints about the services also increased by 43 per cent to 11,572 - the highest ever level. ICSTIS put this down to the rise in unsolicited marketing or spam.

Rejoicing over this by those in the USA may be premature. See: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/pending/callscam.asp

Here's the snopes entry - in case your computer is slow.
Note that it does not say the sign up is a scam but rather the post card tht came in the mail is the fraud.
The sign up is legal and - according to national newscast last night - several million have already signed up, nationwide.
This is to all of you that signed up for the "do not call" law. This week I received a card in the mail that looked alright — It said "vote for your favorite cola — Pepsi or Coke — and receive a complementary 12 pack" It didn't look suspicious — but for some reason I kept looking at it.

THEN I FOUND IT !! At the bottom of the card there is a VERY small statement. It is SO small it is hard to read—but here is what it says— By completing this form, you agree that sponsors and co-sponsors of this offer may telephone you, even if your number is found on a do not call registry or list"

This REALLY upset me and I just wanted all my friends to be aware of this way to get around the "do not call" law !! Just think how many people will send this in and their do not call registry will be NO GOOD !! The company's name is MARKET SOLUTION. Please send this to all your friends that signed up for "do not call". I think this is just one of what we will get in the future—so READ EVERYTHING before you SIGN AND SEND !! AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT IT.!!!! PLEASE !!!

Oh, mercy, yes. That's old. Decades ago I signed up to win a free vacation, only to find myself being called to sign up at a gym. They're still doing it, too, as I saw at a booth when I went to Kentucky Music Weekend just a couple of weeks ago. My friend was already writing on the front, until I started reading the back, and sure enough--the same thing: "...you agree to..."--bleah!

When I first got my computer, I would occasionally sign up to get free (hah) things on-line; I don't, any more. Besides all the spam, somehow I got signed up for some unknown telephone service.

The old saying holds true, "if it looks too good to be true - it probably is." Scammers and spammers are here to stay and whatever law they will find a way around it eventually. Thanks for the warning on this one though.

On a word-related note, I was interested to see that that the DNC registry excludes, telephone "surveyors". When I see surveyor, I automatically think of theodolites. The company I work for calls us, its coal-face plebs, "interviewers", while a surveyer (I've only heard the word used in this context, not seen it, so the sp. is a guess) is one who actually writes the surveys.
