Dear Bingley: I'm finding a lot of good stuff in the Smith Dictionary. In the section about slings, it calls the projectiles "plummets" which I had 'plumb' failed to recognize as being related to plumbum = lead. Some time ago I found a site with picture of lead sling missiles, that were obvious moulded from lead, and looked a bit like an Amnercan football. Regrettably the arricle gave no clue as to their size or weight. Hundreds of them are still to be found on some of the old battlefields, because lead is comparatively resistant to corrosion, I guess. The dictionary also referred to them as "glandes" suggesting that they were of acorn size. I have thrown automobi;le roller bearings the size of my thumb at least a hundred yards. Could be deadly.
