The Times of London headline proclaimed: "Campbell holds nerve to see off Woods challenge." I don't think we use this phrasal verb in this manner (nor any other) on this side of the Pond.

In this part of Left Pondia to "see someone off" means to accompany them to the departure point and bid a last farewell as late as possible.
