Try this one. http://168.16.169.58/magritte.htm It's not as good a representation but it shows another example that I hadn't known about. *It isn't an apple.

Didn't you all have some discussion years back...

I think one set of definitions was round brackets() vs square brackets [] vs curly brackets{}, also known sometimes as (parentheses) [brackets] and {braces}.

To add to these I now offer by extension: <pointy brackets>.

Really? Thanks for pointing that out...you learn something new everyday. Could you post a picture of a cigar or a baseball bat next so I can find out what those things look like, too.

--WO'N Obvious you knew that was bound to appear someday, didn't you, tsuwm?

Check my second link. There's a picture there that's not an apple.

Are you sure that's not an apple?

Posted By: Faldage Re: Hey! A WP Discover! - 01/26/03 09:05 PM
It says it isn't an apple. Who am I to argue with the artist?

Posted By: Capfka Re: Hey! A WP Discover! - 01/30/03 09:34 PM
If an apple won't admit to being an apple perhaps it's got the pip? Of course, if an Apple won't admit to being an Apple, well, that's fully understandable. President Jobs, indeed!

The thing that weren't an apple din't say squat about what it were or weren't. It were the artist what said it weren't an apple. He's the one what painted it so I'd be inclined to believe him.

Posted By: Capfka Re: Hey! A WP Discover! - 01/31/03 07:29 AM
Oh? Ever heard of Salvadore Dali? Who'd have believed anything he said? Except Gala, of course, who clearly believed him when he said "Marry me, my sweet, and I'll paint you nude, half-dressed, fully dressed and as part of some animal, and make you famous!". Well, maybe he was speaking the truth about that!

Besides which, I've seen the picture (or a picture of the picture) and I'm positive that it's a picture of an apple and not an apple per se.

Posted By: WhitmanO'Neill Re: Hey! A WP Discover! - 01/31/03 04:27 PM
Well, technically, guys...if you want to be boringly Descartes about all this:

It's not an apple, it is a painting of an apple.

It's not an apple, it is a photograph of an apple.

If you can't eat it, then it's obviously not an apple.

I mean, is this a can of Campbell's Tomato Soup?:

It is an apple.

An apple is more than the actual fruit. In our language, we name things. And we name drawings of familiar forms, such as apples, with the words from the language.

Sorry. Show me a drawing of an apple and I'll use my language to identify what you've shown me--the word my language provides for that drawing--tough luck--is apple.

All that said, I love the art! I love the written "This is not an apple." It's humorous. and even ironically so

Good morning, Juan. Glad to see you finally woke up. Cuppa coffee?

Cuppa coffee?

mmmm...I can smell the rich aroma from here!...

But Horace opined that if there was appleness to it then it probably was an apple, even if all it did was evoke a memory of an apple. Some people though prefer to put Descartes before the Horace.

Posted By: Capfka Re: if you want to be boringly Descartes - 01/31/03 09:59 PM
Horrible, Ted! My pun was so much more subtle. Connie actually thought she spotted it first. I wrote all that crap about Dali just so I could trot out Gala's name, too.

Damn, another one bites the apple - er, dust.

Pfranz, tsk...tsk...tsk! I caught your subtle pun, reddened it's cheek a little and sent it back to your courtland. Not my fault you weren't looking and DubDub took over
EDIT Okay, I've had my coffee now. I smirked. Should I be sorry I caught your pun or that I responded to it?

Posted By: Wordwind Re: if you want to be boringly Descartes - 02/03/03 12:11 PM
Consuelo and Pfranz,

My appleogies. I'll shut up when you two are sharing your bites.
