I've checked Max's information on cookies and have searched various threads here. But nothing I've tried is helping.

These pages are downloading extremely slowly--nearly 30 seconds for a page, sometimes longer. Whereas on Google, the pages come up very quickly, within about 2 to 7 seconds, depending upon the link.

Not being computer savvy, I've done everything I can think of to make my computer faster, even though I realize my computer's not the problem.

Are you all having the same problem? Is WAD downloading pages unusually slowly these days? If not, is there something I can do to speed up WAD on my computer?

Many thanks for any help here.
WW

Dear WW: I have a big hard disk, plenty memory, a fast processor, and DSL. I can't tell when the trouble is with AWAD server and when it is accursed pacbell.net that is the trouble. It has taken me ten minutes to be able to reply! It takes a lot of fun out of participating in the board. I have trouble using other sites, but not so bad.Bill

Well, they say, "Misery loves company," but it would be nice to access that company a bit more quickly.

Logically, of course, it would just make you more miserable more quickly.

I'm pretty sure that AWAD sits on a duff server and one with pretty limited bandwidth available to it. I think I've suggested before that if someone knows of a fast server with great gobs of unused capacity and access to good bandwidth then they should tell Anu.

...and more quickly to experience love.

So, now we wait for someone to suggest that capacious great gobber of a fast server to suggest to Anu.

I, for one, am mystified when you guys complain about this. On my computer, the only time the 'wad is slow is when the rest of the internet is slow. Otherwise it's very fast.

Tonight the board is downloading very quickly. I defragmented two of my drives (rather, my computer defragmented them for me; thank you, computer) and things are chugging along much better. However, I don't think the defrag' had anything to do with the good speed I'm enjoying.

Movin' right along,
DubDub I sure wish there were a lot of action on the board to celebrate this happy turn of events.

It was lousy all morning and afternoon, but is much better this evening. I wonder what made the difference.

One thing that mayhelp is to clear out your internet cache. This is a place that stores all of the little files that are associated with a page view. Sometimes there are 30 or even 50 files that get put together to display an internet page.

There are various ways of doing it, but the result is often much faster time particularly on AOL. Try this. If all you are cleaning out is your temporary internet files it cannot hurt.

Goodness! I though it was just me ... even Thanksgiving Day was s-l-o-w and usually holidays, and weekends are faster ... but then it *is faster today. I have a note posted to remind me clean the cache and history every Sunday and reboot.
Called my friend the Computer Guru and was told to shut down and re-start every day!!!! I have no idea what else he said as he spoke in "computer-ese." But it sounded very impressive.
Ttttthat's all, Folks.

shut down and re-start every day!!!!

I do that. it's of absotively no help to Anu's sad excuse for a server.
(yes, it is somewhat better today...)

Hmmm...another fly in the ointment! It posted both my preview (which I deleted here) and my final edit. THAT has never happened before! ???

Yes, I have to say the loading time is generally a LOT s-l-o-w-e-r than when I first arrived here early last spring, and it does get frustrating. Especially Q & A and Miscellany! I wonder if the length of the ongoing main threads and their accompanying loading times could be alleviated if Anu would consider archiving all posts prior to a certain date. That may help break-up the log jam. but then I have the computer savvy of a toad, so what do I know?

If I may paraphrase myself from another thread: Fools rush in - etc. Savour the s-l-o-w unveiling of each line!
