The BBC Radio 4 (and World Service) programme "The Routes of English" is now into Series 4. This series looks pricipally at English around the world. It is worth installing real player, as there are now sound clips.

I particularly liked hearing Bill Bryson in:

and the discussion of 'Ocker':

Dear jmh: I am bitterly disappointed that I got "server not responding" to each of your URLs. And to tease you, it was mis-spelled "Routes of English". I am shedding tears as large as horseapples in frustration.

You are quite right Bill. I have clearly internalised the play on words in the title, I'll change it to avoid confusion.

The links work fine from here, so it may be a local problem. An alternative way in is through the http://www.bbc.com or http://www.bbc.co.uk site (same site, different address) and use their search engine if you can get that far.

"server not responding"

I had no problem with routesofenglish. You would have gotten a different error messaqe if the url had been spelled wrong; something like "that url does not exist"

I wqs in BBC, and clicked on header "Routes of English" I'll try again. While browsing around, I found a very extensive list of unusual words. Very short definitions, no etymology (sob, sob).
http://phrontistery.50megs.com/p.html URL as given brings up words starting with "p". Only way I could get other letters was by changing the "p" at end of URL to "a" or whatever. Much, much longer than wwftd.

P.S. I went back, and discovered that there is no text, only spoken presentation, which I can hear butcannot comprehend.
