Gee, I didn't know my PMs had such devastating effects!

P.S. I received the response just fine.

Dear Max: I regret having unwittingly offended by sending you so many PMs. I too very much regret that I have no copy of the PMs I send, and often cannot remember what I have said to whom. But I do enjoy receiving PMs, and would welcome more than I get.

The annoying thing I discovered about the PMs is that I often didn't know wether I'd sent something or not, and ended up posting multiple copies of the same message - silly system! E-mail is a simple alternative - and might I happily remind you Max, that I have only contacted you by menas of SMTP in ther past.

Bill admits: I often cannot remember what I have said to whom.

Sounds familiar:-)

Poor Max! I am sorry that you have such trouble with the PM system.

FWIW, I never have a bit of trouble with it, making me think that the problem is either timing - you are up and posting/reading/responding during the time the AWAD server is undergoing daily maintenance routines - or has its source in the connection between you and the AWAD server... your ISP or an intervening server, or something.

Anyway, may I suggest that you modify your Profile page to no longer accept PMs, so that people don't inadvertently make you nuts? (At least, not by sending PMs )

yes, yes, yes, i hate that i don't have a copy of what i've sent-- someone asked me, if they could quote me-- and i though-- what exactly did i write? i sent a PM since i didn't want some of what i said being public-- either because it's too personal (l have sent others i feel comfortable with, my real email address,) or because its not really appropriate for any of the threads.. (oh, a recipe say..)

I must say that I completely agree with Max - I also hate the system.

However, (that wonderful word, beloved of all academics!) I have found ti very useful in the past in keeping in touch with people on the board who have been having e-mail problems, so I am prepared to forgive it it's shortcomings.
Also, I haven't published my e-mail address to all and sundry, so how the hell else can they get in touch, one asks?

I agree that when you get a run of PMs, it's hard to remember what you said and who you said it to because of the lack of a copy. I did have a go at copying PM contents to a text file before I sent them, but that got out of hand very quickly.

Sorry you're having trouble with PMs, Max - I've never had any at all.

Sorry you're having trouble with PMs, Max - I've never had any at all, CK laments

awwww, how sad. well be patient; maybe someone will send you one someday.

caradea-- thank you, you've inspired me.. maybe, rather than leaving poor CK out in the cold, we should all send him little love notes.. not an old fashioned flame, that over whelms his mail, but each of us could send him a X, (kiss) or a 0 (hug)
or maybe even
@----\-- some ascii roses.. or at the very least, \-/, a shot of whiskey to drowned his sorrows.

Friend Max, There IS a way (quite simple, really) to retain a copy of PMs. Both Jackie and Caradea -and perhaps others - can 'splain it to you (as they did for me some months ago.)Whilst I durst not trust my 19th Century memory or 17th Century computing skills, I feel certain these AWAD stalwarts would gladly oblige you. As to the other problems involved w/ PMs, there may be equally simple solutions. In any event, "Good luck! We're all counting on you!" (This is a quote which my (grown) children often throw around. I think it may be from a film or perhaps a Monty Python skit.) As I review other posts to you, it occurs to me that I also have sent PMs to you in your other-worldly _(i.e. non-AWAD) name. E-mail works well enough.

Do you mean the receiver should make the effort of copying the sender's PM into their PM when replying to a message? That certainly is one way to get round the problem of not having a 'Sent messages' folder, nonetheless, I think Max sees the PM system as 'fatally flawed' (sic).

In reply to:

One does not get a record of one's sent PM's

Why not just compose PM's in an external editor then C&P them into the Board's message window? Sounds easier than posting a rant here.

I'm posting this publically in deference to your dislike of PM's Max. I tried emailing you from AWADabilia but it was bounced back with the following message:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at paradise.net.nz.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<<maxq@paradise.net.nz>:
Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.1)

not only that, max, but "Web Site Not Responding" is all I've seen from your link today.

I was just at Max's site, and it was working fine then.

Web Site Not Responding

there must be a server problem somewhere along the line.

It's just like when your car makes a strange noise and does some little thing you want to find out about. As soon as you get to the repair shop it stops and never does it for the mechanic. I think there's a name for this syndrome. If not, let's get to work to coin one.
