I read "Get Fuzzy" daily - nice to know there are others who get their funnies on the net. I laughed out loud about this one.
I have an Origami-a-Day calendar myself......

Posted By: AnnaStrophic Re: A new take on AWAD - 03/30/05 12:41 PM
Thanks, Jackie.

Origami-A-Day sounds great: recycling your calendar into art!

I'm trying to imboost my wordage, too.

Posted By: Jackie Re: A new take on AWAD - 03/30/05 01:27 PM
Thanks, Jackie. Heh--I'm glad one of us knows what you're doing!

Posted By: Elizabeth Creith Origami-a-Day - 03/30/05 03:39 PM
The theory is that you use yesterday's page to make today's fold - but I usually file the calendar pages for future reference and use old Sears and Lee Valley catalogue pages - colourful, cheap, and I can make 8 1/2" squares if I'm having difficulty with a fold.
I know, totally off-topic, but I'm such a paper freak!

do you know this site? one of my favorites

http://papertoys.com/

and dover books had some great book on paper.. including a take a part book that you can make into a paper clock--(it works!) you have to supple the weights for the drive, everything else is paper..

(in some future livetime, i will open a hobby shop called pen and paper, yarn and needles--for paper and needlework lovers every where.. there will be over lap--a bookbinding section with linen cords for tying together the folio's, and lovely linens for binding.. and perforated paper for embroidery.. and paper yarns for knitting.. (and silk for pen and ink drawings, -- one day..

It's a popular choice.

Yeah. I noticed on the news the other day that the 'books on toast' thing didn't work out too well.

> 'books on toast'

It might just scrape by, but would have to be well done.

Posted By: Jackie Re: 'books on toast' - 03/31/05 01:52 PM
...and you'd have to jam them together.

Posted By: Elizabeth Creith Great site! - 03/31/05 02:01 PM
Wow! I've bookmarked it! Just spent twenty mintues having a quick look, thanks for feeding my addiction, oftroy. I can see another Indulgent Husband look happening when my other half gets home and finds the Great Pyramind and Sphinx on the dining room table....
And Dover is a great publisher for re-issuing old, out of print stuff in affordable format.
Yeah, books on toast never did take off - the jam stuck the pages together.

On the other hand, there was that fascinating volume with the latest theories about perpetual motion machines a while ago...

Posted By: dxb Re: cat chit - 03/31/05 02:34 PM
Huh? (couldn't get near that one, let alone catch it)

Posted By: maverick Re: cat chit - 03/31/05 03:34 PM
Proposition 1: buttered toast, if dropped, ALWAYS lands buttersidedown
Proposition 2: A cat, no matter from what height or in what manner airborne, will ALWAYS land on its feet
Conclusion: buttered toast when strapped on the back of a cat will end up hovering just above the beige carpet, revolving in a perpetual and self-cancelling spin!

I think it had been refined to take additional factors into account but.

...Do not try this on Bucky.

Do not try this on Bucky

Or any other cat, for that matter. It should be noted that the claimed perpetual hovering is only theoretical as no-one has ever been able to strap the toast on the back of any cat sufficiently agile to land on its feet.

Posted By: maverick Re: Catastrophe - 03/31/05 11:28 PM
And anyway, we understand that the mere fact of observing said cat makes the outcome very uncertain.

Posted By: Faldage Re: Catastrophe - 03/31/05 11:51 PM
Only if it lives with Herr Schrödinger.

Posted By: maverick Re: Catastrophe - 04/01/05 01:02 AM
Cats don't live with people. They sometimes tolerate us sharing their space - providing we make ourselves useful :)

Dogs have masters. Cats have staff.

Posted By: TEd Remington Cats have staff. - 04/01/05 11:17 AM
Not in this household. Staff get pay.

Posted By: Elizabeth Creith Re: Cats have staff. - 04/01/05 01:15 PM
Good point, TEd. Maybe it should be "Dogs have masters. Cats have slaves."

Dear etaoin,

I think that if 'imboost' was in my wordage, then it would be imboosted, my wordage that is!

Isn't there a thing about not advertising on the board?

Posted By: Dgeigh Re: A new take on AWAD - 04/06/05 03:10 AM
self-cancelling spin

A.K.A. 'Watching Ellie'

a thing about not advertising on the board

Not to mention our low tolerance for repetition of signatures.

But stick around, BonnyLaddie. You look like a good addition to the board. Just know, we get tired of more inspired signatures than yours quite quickly.

Posted By: BraveLad Re:Signatures - 04/06/05 03:35 PM
Is that what it was? I'd have to have my head examined to think that word freaks would be good prospects for my financial software which is priced way above the consumer level!

The signature block is gone. And why is the field there at all since each message is labeled by the originator?

Sincerely,
One who is unclear on the concept

You noticed!

Posted By: BraveLad Re:Signatures - 04/06/05 04:55 PM
Dear Falodage,

One of my favorite sayings is "I'm always trying to make sense of my environment" and sometimes I self-deprecatingly add, ""generally without success!"

I see from your profile you may have some sympathy with this predicament.

Not by the way, but directly inline, could you please translate your Latin motto, "Non eandem arborem videt."

I got as far as "Not same tree sees" which could I suppose mean you are dancing a jig to the skirl of a different bagpiper?!

Hi, BraveLad. Just another tip to get you settled here: many of us don't read threaded (like moi) and thus would have no idea who you're responding to unless you mention the person's name in your post, or quote a little of the post you're responding to.

Posted By: BraveLad Re: Threaded vs Flat - 04/07/05 01:21 AM
Dear Anastrophic,

Thanks for the tip about setting the context for the flatlanders!

I am perusing the FAQs, but is there another place such as a thread where such practical maneuvers are discussed at more length? Or are there some words or phrases typically directed at newbies that would help me locate such helpful comments as yours?

Oh BTW, if I was a figure of speech which one would I likely be?

BraveLad

You bet, Brave Lad! I sent you a private message yesterday about it. (Click on Check Private) And go to the Information & Announcements forum for "Tips for Newcomers."
