Mm, yes; there's an ad on TV now where people talk about getting pictures "out of the camera and onto the paper". I think I'd prefer to get photo paper and print them out myself, thank you. I didn't like the sound of this: The tool ... automatically detects photos as they are added to a PC - whether sent via e-mail or transferred from a digital camera. It just makes me think that the time of Big Brother is getting closer and closer. If/when we ever buy a new car again, I intend to find out whether those positioning gadgets can actually be used to track you (and possibly your speed) by somebody who could use the information against you; and if so, whether the gadgets can be disabled.

Actually I was objecting to the use of "hotting up" instead of "heating up" or "heats up."

Posted By: Wordwind Re: they got the hots - 01/19/05 09:22 PM
Heating up becomes hotting up. So, it would follow that cooling down becomes colding down. Language. You can object, but you sure can't fight it.

I like the idea of a place to store photos. However, I've had a recent experience with an online teacher's website source that one Saturday inadvertantly dumped my entire year's notes to students--and dumped the files of countless other teachers.

From Volume 40, Issue 30 of "The Onion" = America's Finest News Source. 28-July-2004:

"Internet Collapses Under Sheer Weight Of Baby Pictures
SAN FRANCISCO—Many web users were trapped without service Monday, when a large section of the Internet collapsed under the weight of the millions of baby pictures posted online. "Some personal web pages contain literally hundreds of adorable infant photos," MCI senior vice-president Vinton Cerffe said. "Add to that the number of precious pumpkins on photo-sharing sites like Ophoto.com, and anyone can see it was a recipe for disaster. The Internet simply was not designed to support so much parental pride." Cerffe said he expects regular web-traffic flow to resume once the nation's larger Internet providers are reinforced with stronger cuteness-bearing servers."

*********

Isn't objecting to it = fighting it, just as "your one vote can make a difference"? I suppose one would have to have a place to make an objection just as *vocal as the BBC online headlines do...

Posted By: Wordwind Re: Objecting and Fighting - 01/19/05 09:56 PM
Yeah, you're right there, musick, about objections being a kind of fight.

I was using the expression 'you can't fight it' more as a light expression, such as when someone might say, 'You can't fight this heat..' or as a shoulder shrug of resignation. For the record, I don't like the sound of 'hotting up' at all. But then I didn't like the sound of my daughter having referred to 'hotties,' which just sounded plain silly.

It just makes me think that the time of Big Brother is getting closer and closer.

You may already be aware of this, Jackie:

I have no idea how much of it, if any, is true.

Big Brother is closer than you think!

Posted By: Jackie Re: they got the hots - 01/21/05 04:38 PM
Whoa, that's funny-not-so-funny, amnow. I'll make your link clickable (hmm-reminds me of what I just read in by's post, about how we're all in such a hurry; but it is true that a lot of people here won't take the time to copy and paste a link):
http://www.adcritic.com/interactive/view.php?id=5927

It's easy to do: type these brackets--[  ] with url inside them, then put your link, then put the brackets again, but at the end put a / in front of url. Um--it's actually easier done than said . I will put the example, but I will use the brackets that come up when you use the Shift key--otherwise you couldn't see it.
{url}http://www.adcritic.com/interactive/view.php?id=5927{/url}
Note: I have had many problems when I began a link in the middle of a line. So now I always hit Enter, then start the link cue on a new line: no problems.

Just a quick correction - the sintax needs to be

{url}www.example.com{/url}

so delete the http stuff or it duplicates and doesn't work

Posted By: Jackie Re: they got the hots - 01/21/05 04:48 PM
You're right [lightbulb], mav, normally it does, but...?? My link works. Go figure. Hey, I wonder if that changed when we went to the new server?
Just 'cause you've become a Reverend, doesn't mean you get to levy a sin tax!!

Posted By: amnow Re: they got the hots - 01/21/05 10:40 PM
Jackie and maverick, Thanks for the help. If you'd been looking just now, you'd have seen that I duplicated the post...and had forgotten that I'd already 'sent' the link! Yes, I'm old, and I'm losing my mind!
I had a birthday package for my son-in-law with several cards sitting in the box. The weather forecast is so dire, I decided to mail it today, so I quickly sealed the box and brought it to the PO. When I got home, I typed to my daughter..."send back any unsigned cards, and I'll use them at future appropriate times"! Did I, or did I not sign/send a birthday card? OOPS.

You forgot the last right bracket, mav'. Works like a charm if you add the bracket.

Posted By: maverick Re: sin seerly yours - 01/22/05 04:25 PM
hah! well spotted, WorthyWords! You're absolutely right - I abase myself at your feet Miz J, a repentent sinner :)
