Is it OK to say, "I went to give her her locket back."?

As long as that's what you mean. What seems to be wrong with it? The two personal pronouns in succession? You could reword to:

"I went to give her locket back to her." but I don't think that sounds as nice as the first sentence.

I'm with jheem. It's perfectly correct, and sounds fine to my ear, too.

Thanks jheem and AnnaS! It just didn't look right on paper.

It just didn't look right on paper.

There's this old chestnut, that only looks right after the addition of quotation marks and other punctuation.

Mary where John had had had had had had had.

How about "I went to give her back her locket."?

no one will see it if it's on her back.

That's the silliest thing I've ever heard. No one will see it on here front, either, if it's beneath her clothing.

Hi Jheem:

I posted a longer version of this chestnut when I was much younger, but couldn't locate it by searching.

If only Mary, who had had "had", had had "had had"; "had had" had had the teacher's approval.

Cheers

longer version

Yup, paulb. Like all good folklore, this one exists in more than one version.

Mary where John had had had had had had had. etc...

just thought I'd add the version I know -

Jim where Bill had had had had had had had had had was right.

(It's not the longest, but it is the one from the Match Wits With Mensa Omnibus Edition...thank heavens for that book! )

In reply to:

Yes, they will if they're behind her.
