have we ever done a survey here to see who's dexter and who's sinister?

Posted By: AnnaStrophic Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/14/03 10:55 AM
I love this title, Max!!

eta, we did so a lo-o-o-o-n-g time ago. It's certainly time to do it again. Last time *our little cross-section of society was way ahead of the average of lefties, which isn't a surprise, since we are more creative and intelligent in general.

Having siad that, I'll start.

LEFT

more creative and intelligent in general

RIGHT...

Posted By: sjmaxq Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/14/03 11:13 AM
I is queer, da.

Posted By: Faldage Re: Dieu et my gosh - 08/14/03 12:04 PM
RIGHT

Posted By: wow Re: Dieu et my gosh - 08/14/03 01:43 PM
it's been said only those who are left handed are in their right minds!
Two leftie brothers but I am always RIGHT ;-)

Posted By: of troy Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/14/03 02:59 PM
double dexterity, (but not ambidexterous!) mostly RIGHT, but many task lefty, and some either hand (so partially ambidexterous!)
-which neatly fits in with my thinking/personality.. not one, not the other, nor both, except sometimes...)

Posted By: nancyk Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/14/03 05:06 PM
RIGHT

Posted By: Jackie Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/14/03 07:48 PM
I am the polar's opposite...

On a side note--my first glance at that url gives me "there gister".
Posted By: consuelo Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/15/03 06:55 AM
right

Posted By: maverick Re: Dieu ate mongoose - 08/18/03 02:55 PM
Left write, right mouse...

other tasks largely equidysfunctional

Posted By: Zed Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/18/03 04:47 PM
More right than left but I could switch if I needed to. I did learn to use chopsticks with my left.
sjmaxq - is queer da, I like it. da reich, ja is the only pun I could come up with but it's too many languages.

Grassias. I used it because I'm curious how the Iberians ended up with such a different word for their better half. French and Italian have continued the sinister theme of the Roman imperialist agressors, where did Spanish come up with izquierda?

Posted By: Faldage Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/18/03 10:35 PM
where did Spanish come up with izquierda?

According to this site
http://www.basque-red.net/eng/euskaeng/ostrowsk.htm
it's from Basque:

Basque ezker „left (part), left hand“ explains Spanish izquierdo „left“ and izquierda „left hand, (political) left“ (see also esquerre in Catalan and Gascon)

¡Allí está!

Posted By: RhubarbCommando Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/21/03 11:47 AM
I'm mostly right, but can do most things fairly well, if rather slowly, with my left when necessary.

Posted By: Capfka Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/21/03 01:17 PM
I'm further to the right than Genghiz Khan ...

Posted By: Faldage Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/21/03 01:25 PM
How far to the right *was G. Khan?

Posted By: RhubarbCommando Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 08/21/03 01:29 PM
Even further than that notoriously right-wing nationalist, Josef Marionovich Djugashvilli.

But are we writing about the right rite?

Posted By: wofahulicodoc Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 09/01/03 05:08 PM
I'm with oT, mostly right but hemi-semi-demi left, enough so that when faced with a new task if it seems more convenient I'll learn it with the left hand without a qualm.

Is anybody keeping score? (Indeed, have twenty people replied?) I presume there was at least one among us interested enough to start the thread!

Posted By: Buffalo Shrdlu Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 09/01/03 08:57 PM
I didn't start the thread, but I did ask about the numbers, so here's what I've got so far:
L R Ambi
3 8 2(both of whom said mostly right)

I'm not very good at math, so somebody better check it...

I don't post often, but read often - so I'll tell you.
Mostly LEFT. Out of four kids, two left and two right. I have learned to do some things right-handed (knitting, making oboe reeds, mousing) but my right-handed writing and eating skills would need some hefty practice to make useful.

Posted By: Jackie Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 09/05/03 04:15 PM
Gee, vanguard, if you tried to knit of make reeds with your other hand, would you have to do some lefty practicing? ;-)

Posted By: AnnaStrophic Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 09/05/03 06:35 PM
Thank, vanguard, for weighing in!! Not at all to slight y'all right-handers, but these sketchy microcosmic results provided by etaoin prove my point. Whatever it was.

vanguard, you make oboe reeds?! We are not worthy.... I always felt if I ever played a wind instrument it'd have to be something reedless. I'm way too much the klutz.

Just to make life a little more interesting. Another thang for us to compare:

thanks, Mr Hand.

The genes underlying handedness might also explain why our brains are asymmetrical. And left-handed or ambidextrous people are more likely to store language in the right side of the brain, are more prone to schizophrenia and , anecdotally, are more often creative or even geniuses.

Posted By: Buffalo Shrdlu Re: Dieu ex mon chinos - 09/05/03 07:34 PM
talk to the hand...

Posted By: belMarduk Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 09/06/03 01:19 AM
RIGHT HANDED

Well, ever since the whole "chopped finger" incident anyway. I used to write with my left hand occasionally and do all my calculation (on those office electronic calculators) with my left hand.

Posted By: JohnHawaii Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 09/08/03 03:36 AM
Another righty.

Posted By: musick Re: Dieu et mon gauche - 09/08/03 03:15 PM
Ah, yes... the chopped finger incident (stroking beard thusly).
