We have a chain of sandwich shops here in the UK with a rather better image than most. Their paper napkins at the moment have this written on them (my asterisks – I don’t want to make a commercial):

“The French have a special word for it…’compote’. Whatever, we put loads of it in our ********. One thing it isn’t is jam. Jam contains more sugar, less bits and is completely the wrong texture and taste for a *******. The secret to Helen Riley’s old-fashioned compote is lots of patience and a steam jacketed vessel big enough to simmer a hippo in.”

A sandwich chain that sets out to educate – what next?

Unfortunately Mc Donald’s have just bought a 33% stake – who knows what their future holds now.

Don't fash yourself about the chain's changing. McDonald's seems to leave these subsidiaries alone except to improve their quality and portio control.

They bought Boston Market here about 18 months ago, and the chain has improved a good bit, which was tough to do because they were already pretty good.

A Mc********* ?

All they had to do was employ that old and trusted marketing technique and relaunch it as New and improved Boston Market.
