1. shun insularity (narrowness of mind or feeling, contractedness of view)

Separatism... is the abstraction of a negation, the shadow of a shadow. - Amiel

A kinder, gentler board. With more posts about words.

2. dismiss dissimulation (concealment of what really is, under a feigned semblance of something different; feigning, hypocrisy)

Slander is the revenge of a coward, and dissimulation his defense. - Samuel Johnson

A board on which we are not constantly obliged to search for covert motives,
and hidden agenda.

And no PMs that make recipients cry.

A board where all either say "Hmmmmm. That's interesting." or laugh until they can't breathe, or both. Can I get an "Amen"?

Posted By: Wordwind Re: thinking of a better board - 07/07/02 10:11 AM
Amen, Consuelo.

A board where we extend gifts of language to each other wrapped in sugar cone blue paper and tied with bows of best intentions.

A board with humor. A compassionate board where the people *think before becoming offended by a chance remark or a fumlbnig finger.
Everyone is not always having a great day, every day.

Hey, Geoff! Visit OneLook.com! That site has access to over 700 dictionaries, and almost every word that appears here may be found in one of those. Yes, exceptions to the rule, but rarely.

And to continue: A board on which all have easy access to OneLook.com so that, with quick clicks, all may check out definitions, synonyms, and etymologies of almost every word discussed in posts and PMs, except on days that they're just lazy bums.

Wholehearted agreement to this!

Let's not give up.

I love this thread. What a kind, peaceful, hopeful feeling it gives me....Amen, consuela, sister! and all you lot! Wholehearted agreement from me too.

Geoff, take them tattered dictionaries over to Demented Dictionary and 'ave a go, y'mug! [blowing kiss-e]

Let us go in peace to love and serve the board.

Keiva: you started a flamewar and would not quit.
You were banned and got re-instated only by hinting
you would sue Wordsmith.
I rejoice that you are unable to post except by
devious means. I hope you will soon again be prevented
from posting by this or any other phony name.

THE DEFINITION OF A BETTER BOARD IS ONE WITH NO KEIVA

No hearts were broke
In falcon fall
With dirge and blighting sigh
When from his morbid lips we heard
That crocodiles cry

Its not the board thats the problem, its the people who use it......... Yes I said it.

All indications are that the former troublemaker will trouble us no more
His posts were excellent. Too bad he chose an inappropriate way to try to bring about needed changes.
Let us all try harder not to hurt people's feelings.

Interesting, "jopublic", that you purport to be in the UK when it appears that in fact you are not...

First I thought I'd stumbled on an unregistered dating
agency, now it looks as though I've got a direct line to
the met office. Whats it doing in Japan?
