Perhaps one of you can help me. I remember seeing a quotation somewhere that went something like this: "We will know that civilization has progressed when people plant trees whose shade they will never sit under". It might have been about orchards as well. Can you point me to the source of this quote, or a related quote?

I've heard it somewhere as well, or a version of same.
But I don't know where. Stick around, there are those
on the site who will soon be helping you out, and

One of those quotes that travels so fast it will be hard to find the one who invented it or used it first. Maybe the best quotes are anonymous.

Maybe you can take it from here:

Here you go, Marty. Not vouching for its veracity, mind you, but this is what I found:

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”
Greek proverb quotes

I don't know, but it seems sad to me that people don't get to sit in the shade of the trees they plant! Time just goes by too quickly.

I (and Charlie) spend great amounts of time in the shade of
the 35 pines and spruce trees I've planted.

it seems sad to me that people don't get to sit in the shade of the trees they plant! Time just goes by too quickly. And yet, isn't it a great reminder of how life in all forms has gone on and will go on? The world didn't begin when I was born; nor will it end when I die.

I was just watching on educational TV about a burial ground being discovered just outside of Lima, Peru. I have often thought about ancient peoples and thought, "How could they live like that?"; and I also wonder if people two and three thousand years from now will look at what they know about us and think the same thing.

Your teenagers are saying it now.

Sorry Jackie....I see you are correct, I don't know what happened, but I have posted it again back up in first post!

Maybe it was me....I was reading other articles about it and I might have got the links mixed up.
