I've been losing a lot of sleep lately over the way that many organizations that use acronyms in their names could more accurately be described by alternate words to fit the acronyms. For example, the ACLU ( American Civil Liberties Union) could also be known as America's Crackpot Lawyers United, and the NRA (National Rifle Association) could be more accurately portrayed as the National Republican Army. Are any of you others sick enough to stay awake worrying about such stuff, or should I trot off for more medication?

Geoff, go take your medicine--then pass me the bottle.

ANZAC: Australia-New Zealand Ancestral Commonalities
RCMP: Royal Canadian Marvelous Patrolmen
OPEC: Onerously Protective, Exasperating Countries
EU--I'm leaving that one for the 'cross-the-ponders.

Geoff: How about a new AAA - Anti Acronym Association.Back in the early days of ham radio when it took four keystrokes to produce a single letter, acronyms made sense. Now that our keyboards produce words so painlessly use of acronyms is anachronism.

It is even more annoying when the acronym take longer to pronounce than the actual name. I can't think of one at the moment, but I'm sure we've all come across it.

Bien non Jackie, that doesn't count, as it is all in jest. There are companies that use acronyms that just shouldn't.

And I am crying great big tears that no one signed up for AAA.

That's Automobiles, Alcohol, and Ambulances?

Dear Geoff: your AAA is already too full.
