Has anybody else heard of this game? (It comes from the Match Wits With Mensa Omnibus Edition, if you'd like to know.) The basic concept is that, when you are stuck in traffic, you look for groups of three or four letters on license plates nearby (very common and easy to find). You then try to find a word which contains those letters in order. You can either 'require' the letters to be directly touching each other or simply be in order anywhere in the word. I often 'allow' myself to use the letters backwards in dire circumstances. As the book says, this game may seem simple but it is amazingly addicting!

Greetings, Gonold! (I'm still puzzling out your name).

Yes, I do this all the time, and play around with the numbers, too, looking for patterns. I figured it was just one of my many mini-neuroses. Glad to hear it's been officially sanctioned by Mensa!

About my name...

It is an Elvish word (i.e. J.R.R. Tolkien Lord of the Rings language) meaning 'commander of the halls of knowledge'. As a total wordaholic, I appreciate Tolkien's genius in creating roughly 14 languages (of course, some are only partial). Anybody else use Elvish for anything or have an Elvish name? Let me know!

I always felt that I should have a Quenyan name but never got round to it. I do have a tlhIngan (Klingon) name, but have hardly every used it: rojche'wI' (a calque of my middle name which means 'peaceful ruler' which is at odds with my first name which means 'supplanter'). Now what would my name be in Volapük?

I've played this game for years, using the roolz that the letters must be used in order. When that is impossible, a short sentence may be used. For example, the letters on my car's license plate are TXQ.

What would you do with that?

Well, if we play by gonold's relaxed rules, we get something I'm not too happy to suggest...

TaX Québec

I'd suspect that would be a pretty good insult in that culture! Must be a loan-word from the Vulcan.

It's meant ironically. You gotta a problem with that? (What sort of emoticons do Klingons use?)
