Recently in the acronyms game, plastic was followed by elastic, and this got me thinking about the possibility for a new, hybrid game. I was thinking about blending the acronym game with the game invented by Lewis Caroll, where you change a word one letter at a time into another word. It occurred to me that making the one letter change and supplying an acronym for the changed word could be a bit more of a challenge. It could also be an interesting exercise in free association, an opportunity for totally spontaneous thread-drift, something that has never, ever happened here before.
So, here's my proposal:
We start with a word, and its acronym. Along with the initial word, a given number of steps. Then we just see where we end up.
In case anybody wants to have a go, here's a starter, for ten (steps, that is)
Wet
Inclement
Nasty
Torpid
Enervating
Relentless
I'll go with the obvious change, and see if I got the idea. (Sorry, I'm not so hot with the word part.)

Is dingey a Brit-speak spelling of some kind, I hope? If not, Gamemaster, do we go back to dinged? I would have gone with hinged, from there, but couldn't think of words to go with it.
And--in creating new words, should we take into consideration whether a new word CAN be made from what we've done? I started to put something else instead of winner, but couldn't think of another word that could be made from it.
isn't it allowed to add/subtract a letter? I considered going from singer to singe. what about transposing:
sing > sign?
I would say no to both, based on my experience with word games, but the Gamemaster may say differently.
ooh, I'd vote yes to tansposing - it could make for some interesting variations that mean we don't get locked into common endings or beginnings, don't all you-all think?
Is dingey a Brit-speak spelling of some kind, I hope?Well, it's now an official American variant, isn't it?

I prefer the inherently longer, utopian game, but my guess is "y'all'r gonna need lotsa threads to keep this one going, so help yourself...
I've never seen dingey before, but I've never seen damn time spelled as one word before either, so obviously the USn contingent has adopted the "we don't need no steenkin' rulz" philosophy. As for transposition, I say go for it. All I reall wanted to see was where we would end up, which is why I suggested the Carollian addition. An exercise in psycholinguistics, as Hari Seldon might have called it.
dingey
\Din"gey\, Dingy \Din"gy\, Dinghy \Din"ghy\, n. [Bengalee dingi.]
1. A kind of boat used in the East Indies. [Written also dinghey.] --Malcom.
2. A ship's smallest boat.

Thanks, tsuwm. I did wonder if it was a variant of dinghy, but decided, wrongly, that it was probably a variant of dingy instead.

(I realize there might not be an English word that can be formed from this, but I couldn't resist.)
Thanks y'all. It seemed to be getting bogged down, but it was still not a bad little effort, 15 steps from Winter to Handel, each one acronymified. I'm still waiting for someone to tackle Chaucerian, btw.
It could easily have gone to handed, or (stretching) Hansel.
Usually in this kind of puzzle, you're to end up with an opposite, or at least related, word. Such as winter --> summer. Bit too difficult in this venue, though.
