Since WW's post in I&A I've made a conscious effort to get out there and try new boards, well, at least to post on StraightDope. It's not going brilliantly so far, but there was a mildly diverting game, that I reckon would be more fun if you lot played, ( also I am well impressed with my last post on the SD thread and can't resist seeing if you can top it) so:
**paste from the SDmb**

Look at the author of the quote in the second Gurunet def.:pal·imp·sest (păl'ĭmp-sĕst')
n.
1.A manuscript, typically of papyrus or parchment, that has been written on more than once, with the earlier writing incompletely erased and often legible.
2.An object, place, or area that reflects its history: “Spaniards in the sixteenth century . . . saw an ocean moving south . . . through a palimpsest of bayous and distributary streams in forested paludal basins” (John McPhee).
[Latin palimpsēstum, from Greek palimpsēston, neuter of palimpsēstos, scraped again : palin, again + psēn, to scrape.]

Edit Eta beat me by a few seconds, so to avoid confusion, I've deleted mine.

Two suggestions:

1. let's not use the acronym as a word in its expansion
and
2. unlike those benighted souls at Straight Dope, let's continue to try to make an effort to make the expansion have something to do with the initials. More of a challenge that way, ¿danyet?
