Heard a riddle today which appealed to me!
Q: Why should the Irish police use the Hubble telescope in their attempts to find Shergar?
Shergar, a Derby winning race horse stolen in 1983, by IRA terrorists
Are you sure that wasn't a chalker you overheard?
Shergar, a Derby winning race horse stolen in 1983 Thanks, moss. No guess on the riddle; but what's a chalker, please?
mmm, what's a chalker? Re Shergar, think what the Hubble's good for...
think what the Hubble's good for
Wait, wait. Don't tell me.
Taking pictures of dogs that don't bark in the night, right?
LOL! (email notification?)
think what the Hubble's good for...
It's good for discovering hidden stars?
Wait! I've got it. They should use Hubble because Shergar disappeared from the face of the earth.
Good try. But think what Hubble looks at (prolly amongst a host of other kinds but)
what Hubble looks at
Ha! Barnard 33.
Q: Why should the Irish police use the Hubble telescope in their attempts to find Shergar?
Because he might as well have fallen into a black hole, for all the luck they've had in finding him?
Does this have something to do with the Horseshoe nebula?
k
> Ha! Barnard 33.
Que?!
> Black hole
mmm, interesting try.
> Horseshoe nebula?
hah, good try but :)
But look again at the hint in my title line...
Aagh!! [tearing hair e]
I didn't think mine was right; it wasn't in keeping with a riddle. But I wish I'd Googled earlier; I wasn't sure there was a horseshoe nebula (there is), but I did find B 33. Horsehead Nebula. ... There are several objects in this image. The dark nebula that forms the Horsehead itself is known as Barnard 33
>> Ha! Barnard 33.
well, that's certainly as obscure as mav's hints..
-ron niveous, from the Crab Nebula
oh, Fong, what are you on, and can I share? :)
Just tell me when you want to cry nuncle, Ron!
Q: Why should the Irish police use the Hubble telescope in their attempts to find Shergar?
AGH! So many things swirling around in my head; and none will nova into anything coherent: because they need a big look-see; because he's in the heavens; because he's Sure Gone so far; because that's how the horsehead nebula was formed. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
[tearing hair e]
I think it's best to ignore him when he gets like this, Jackie. An I ain' splainin him no Barnard 33 jus to get *his goat. Turned out to be wrong, anyway.
Q: Why should the Irish police use the Hubble telescope in their attempts to find Shergar?
Because it's great for discovering X-ray sources!
okay, now 'spain it to me... vewwy slowly
-ron gobemouche
X-ray sources
See, Jackie? I tole you it's best to ignore him.
When I said it aloud a couple of times, I *finally got it. Shame on you, Mav.
It's bad enough having them staring us in the face. Having to try to derive them ourselves is a little over the top.
Slithy! Wonderful to see you!
Faldage, I may henceforth take your advice; you always show good horse sense.
Carry on
[hear the finger cymbals and ankle bells, smell the sandlewood and amber?]
not being able, myself, to see in the X-ray spectrum, I think of the Hubble as primarily a "visible light" telescope. them's mostly the pictures I've seen. that's what threw me for a loop.
Puts me in mind of the the old cattle rancher who died and left his three boys to carry on. The ranch was renamed "Focus"--and why would that be?
'tis not meet that I answer this, John! ;)
is that three boys to carrion?
Carrion, my wayward son... (never made it home, I guess
)
the old cattle rancher who died and left his three boys to carry on. The ranch was renamed "Focus"--and why would that be? ...and if you feel like being magnanimous you can even post the answer on the remote thread called "Answers to puzzles, or, go ahead, spoil your fun!" and then let the banter continue here!

I've heared the answer but, fortunately, I don't remember it.
Factum est. On the answers board.
> I've heared the answer
Izzat anything like herd the answer? ;)
Because it's great for discovering X-ray sources!
That's enough to make you Nashua teeth.
Hey, TEd! Great to see you back an all.
