I like them all, or none...

so let it be a.

short's sweet - give me an el (dies faustus)

Posted By: Jackie Re: faust defined - 07/11/03 10:47 PM
I'll go for g, and I like your word definiens. GuruNet says it's from Latin definiens*, present participle of definire*, to define. Makes me want to say something along the lines of, "Dose Finians are de finest tings I ever cam across."

* These words had lines or carets over most of the vowels; they reproduced as cedillas. :-(

Gimme a c...and no delfiniums for me, thank you.

I'll go for an l, as well.

I like "j", I just hope *it doesn't turn out to be ironic.

Sure was, wurn't 'e. So I'll take I.

I cast my vote for H

A yearning for heaven, yup.

Posted By: WhitmanO'Neill Re: a burst of hot air - 07/13/03 11:15 AM
Have to take H, with kudos for the splendid imagery if it's a bluff!

Posted By: AnnaStrophic Re: faust defined - 07/13/03 08:26 PM
A für moi.

(These are all good: k is especially neat; but alas, I think, too tidy.)

Posted By: Wordwind Re: faust defined - 07/13/03 11:17 PM
J here because I like the sound of fausting in whist

Posted By: maahey Re: faust defined - 07/14/03 01:00 AM
D gets mine. Struggled with J for sometime, but, the windy association finally got the better of me.

Posted By: RhubarbCommando Re: faust defined - 07/14/03 09:07 AM
It is obviously (EDITED)
A

Posted By: AnnaStrophic Re: faust defined - 07/14/03 12:42 PM
Now, c'mon, Rhuby, which is it? I like them both myself, but.

Now, c'mon, Rhuby, which is it?

methinks we're seeing an errant [b ]old tag!

Posted By: tsuwm Re: faust defined - 07/14/03 02:38 PM
RC, please confirm that you meant A

Posted By: dxb Re: faust defined - 07/14/03 04:05 PM
K is very clever - but I don't believe it. So I'll go for 'h'. Mind you the shoelace device is just about strange enough to be true, and it's very Victorian, they loved all those tricky little inventions...but no, I'll stick with 'h'.

an errant [b ]old tag!

Sure you don't mean terrible old blag? :) [/innocent]

I'm only missing a vote from Tross and a confirmation from Rhuby..

Posted By: RhubarbCommando Re: faust defined - 07/16/03 10:46 AM
I hereby confirm that I meant [b ]A
gold star to eta!
sorry for the confuschias

I wonder where Tross got to?

Posted By: tsuwm Re: Yoo hoo! Tross! - 07/21/03 03:36 AM
come what may, I'll post the results late tomorrow..

Such hubris! What if you're late by tomorrow?

I'm sure the hogmaster has appointed a literary executor to take care of these things, just in case.

Bingley

What if you're late by tomorrow?

quite so, max: the denizons of the Scottish Islands, when making such a promise, will always add, "... if the Lord spares me," as a rider. To do otherwise is to tempt fate far to much!
I mean -- his literary executor might take the job too literally!

Posted By: AnnaStrophic Re: hubris - 07/21/03 01:58 PM
And in the southern US we have the similar "...Good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise."

Posted By: maahey Re: hubris - 07/21/03 04:45 PM
Good Lord willin'

Inshallah, in Arabic.

Or west of it, if you follow Supertramp's advice.

It's as I feared! Tomorrow never comes *sob*

"come what may" evidently excludes computer problems..

meanwhile, the OED def'n is L (kudos to Bingley and maverick), and there was a multiway tie at the top with 2 points.. (maahey[h], mav[c], RC[j], ron[a] -- if I recall correctly; all my records are at home.)

There you go. Not with a bang, but a whimper.
