When the Saints go marching in, which one will you march behind?
A clerical friend of mine sent me this, which might amuse some of you.

Internet: Archangel Gabriel in line-up for web patron saint

The Archangel Gabriel has been placed among contenders to become the patron saint of the internet, the Indian Express reported.

According to an internet poll, he is now in sixth place behind a 20th Century martyr, an educator and a publisher born in the 19th Century, an 18th Century evangelist and a 13th Century nun who saw visions projected on a wall.

The website http://www.santiebeati.it is soliciting votes with the aim of having an Internet patron saint named by Easter. ''We had lots of requests for a patron, so we decided the Internet was the best tool for finding one,'' said Roberto Diani, an Internet advisor for Italy's Conference of Bishops.

San Giacomo Alberione, who founded of a major Roman Catholic publishing house and is set for beatification this year, leads the internet patron race with 29 per cent of the vote.

Humbug! The net already has a patron Saint, and she predates most of those candidates - Arachne.

"Arachne wove scenes of the love affairs of the gods." and was turned into a spider by Athena for her efforts.

Did Loki ever get co-opted by the RCC?

Had I read this before this lunchtime, sjm, I would have pointed out that Arachne pre-dated saints and sainthood by a few centuries.
HOWEVER - I hosted a lecture this lunchtime on Saints, Sanctity and Satan where the excellent lecturer, a retired united Reform Church minister, traced the antecedents of sainthood as far back as Imhotep and hinted that only lack of time had prevented him from taking the idea back even earlier.

So - here's to St.Arachne, patron saint of us all!

No, Michael (another archangel) 12 years in a convent school! Check your OED!

wow, I just *knew that would be misinterpreted. what I meant, of course, is that promoting Gabriel as a patron saint was typical of 'net disinformation.
-Michael (wwftd master, not saint)

FWIW, my minister-lecturer included archangels on an equal footing with saints. (But I do agree with you, wow - they certainly is a different sort of fish!)

What has always puzzled me is where conventional Christian theology came up with the rest of the archangels - the Bible itself mentions only one, and only names two angels of any flavour.

Is it St. Arachne that sends me so much goddawful pornography?
