I am disappointed that The Worst Words doesn't have the sound files, so I can learn to pronounciate them properly.

Also note the usage of the word screwed in the explanatory note to service .

Dear AS: sorry to have kept you waiting. The only thing I objected to was its use as a sly
anti-Americanism. You must have seen Quinion's discussion of it. The only thing I would
be interested in is how it was kept in place, to keep it from getting into the works.
That would be almost as bad as beach sand.

Some famous actress or other of the 1950s was at a party wearing an extremely low-cut, strapless gown, and was confronted by an elderly man who glanced deep into her cleavage and remarked boorishly, "I cannot imagine what keeps that dress in place."

She replied coolly, "Perhaps, sir, it's your age."

How about Bob Hope's line that modern girls powdered more cheeks and curled more hair?
