Dear Max: Much satire is sophomoric, but that first one wasn't even freshmanic. Smuggling a volcano, for instance.........

Max, Mad magazine would be classified as satire I suppose, and that's humor in a jugular vein.

The AHD has this to say about satire:

A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit.

There doesn't seem to be any requirement for subtlety or irony. These are optional extras, satirically speaking. It just means taking the piss, Max. The links you give do that. And I do like to see Mike Moore getting mentioned, don't you?

American satire declared obsolete! Can't compete with reality anymore!
