The results for wittol are in. Again a round not without interest, at least from my side of the fence.
tswum receives 3 points for knowing the word straight off (in the wwftd queue) and my apologies for not including his entry which I thought was too close. Some excellent definitions from the board as evidenced by the spread of votes, with a few favourites. Hyla and fiberbabe with 3 each, and Flatlander, WO'N, Marianna, consuelo, and myself (Thanks RC) all picking up a point.
paulb, wordcrazy, Brandon, and Bobyoungbalt all chose the "correct" answer which was the acquiescent cuckold. The "What the hell do the rules say about this" situation this week was that Hyla pointed out half way through the voting that two answers were correct. In focussing in on the cuckold meaning, I had completely forgotten that wittol also has the secondary meaning of a witless person. As such, Bingley's entry of "not even a halfwit" (correctly semi-attributed by tswum) scores 3 points for being correct, and Hyla and maverick get 2 points each for choosing it. I decided that Bingley would get the higher of the points from guesses or being correct, I don't think he needs both (sorry Bingley).
So here are the names and votes (n) (not including votes for self) for the entries:

1 - RhubarbCommando (0)
the ceremonial drink taken before saxon council meetings. It was similar to mead, but only mildly alcoholic, and was designed to promote harmony and wisdom in the meetings.
2 - Flatlander (1)
hydronitrous acid (H2N)
3 - Fiberbabe (3)
A pleated panel attached at the upper back bodice on an 18th Century woman's dress, usually extending to the hemline or creating a small train.
4 - caradea (0)
An adjustable pole connected to the clew of the jib and the mast to hold the sail away from the mast when going downwind
5 - Bobyoungbalt (0)
any of various objects used by the Druids for purposes of divination; a Druidic oracle.
5 - maverick (0) (included with previous entry)
A ancient reference to the tree (normally an oak) which was considered to be the source of wisdom in druidic ritual.
6 - Jackie (0)
Forerunner of "with all". Was used to end sentences, as in, "I object, your Grace, wittol". Was understood in former times to include whatever was appropriate. Here, "with all due respect".
7 - consuelo (1)
Large, grassy plain in the mountains; plateau
8 - Bingley (also correct) (2)
stupid person, person with no wits, not even a half-wit
9 - wordcrazy (0)
A leaping, homopterous insect, the young of which form a frothy mass of liquid on plant stems.
10 - jimthedog (0)
A type of boomerang used only in Tasmania.
11 - Marianna (1)
A type of pond reed, similar to sedge.
12 - Brandon (0)
A soft and aromatic Peruvian wood burned as incense
13 - Original Correct Answer (4 + tswum)
A husband who accepts his wife's infidelity.
14 - squid (0)
A zeolitic mineral, occurring generally in masses of a radiated structure. It is a hydrous silicate of aluminia, lime, and soda.
15 - rodward (1)
The fee paid to be taught the secret knowledge of medieval guilds.
16 - Hyla (3)
An undershot water wheel with buckets fixed to its rim, used to raise water from a stream, especially in primitive irrigation systems
17 WhitmanO'Neill (1)
The mounds of regurgitated earth that nightcrawlers leave at the surface of their holes.

BTW, helen had problems viewing the table. Do you all see this as a neat table as I do, or is it all compressed? Any honest complaints and snivelling whinges on the scores to me as usual.

As previously mentioned, I am away from early next week so who next? Or give it a rest? It is a bit of work being quizmaster but quite fun.

since no one is currently in control, here's a ballot

[ ] give it a rest
[ ] coerce squid into being next
[ ] give it back to mikey
[ ] none of the above - wait for someone else to leap in to the fray

i love it, and don't vote to give it a rest.

any of the other options sound great to me =)

I haven't much time these days to browse AWAD, but when I do have time I always go first to Hogwash - let's keep it going. Otherwise I might have to actually play the pen-and-paper version of the game, with people I'm actually in the same room with.

Squid, we took a duly legal vote, double checked the chads....

and you lost!

Posted By: Hyla Re: wittol - HW#13 - results - 08/09/01 06:45 PM
In response to your question, rod - I see the table as a list of names with some sinuous columns of numbers after it - but not all compressed. It's a little tough to follow, but one can make it out - it does not look like the neat results of a spread sheet, however.

Posted By: tsuwm Re: wittol - HW#13 - results - 08/09/01 06:47 PM
I have sent the following (non)PM to squid, post haste:

so, are you willing to take up the hogwash mantle for a couple of rounds? you *have, after all, been chosen by acclamation (or is that claymation?). :-)

[how we doin' on coercion?]

the rows are perfectly aligned for me. have you all been messing with your fonts, perhaps?

what's this cut/paste look like to you guys?
                   squid 24 14 0 0 24

aligned vertically, right justified

Posted By: Hyla Re: wittol - HW#13 - results - 08/09/01 07:20 PM
Still a sinuous structure

Still a sinuous structure

indeed. but enough about you, hyla... how'd his list look?

Posted By: WhitmanO'Neill Re: wittol - HW#13 - results - 08/09/01 09:10 PM
Squid it!...but keep it going whomever.
And my graph has always been sinuous but legible.

Posted By: Sparteye Re: wittol - HW#13 - results - 08/10/01 12:37 AM
Yup, it's squid's turn all right. And the grid lines up very nicely for me, Rod. You have been an exemplary MC. Thanks.

Posted By: Bingley Re: wittol - HW#13 - results - 08/10/01 04:44 AM
Both versions of the table look excellent to me, with everything aligned as it should be. If squid is uncontactable or unavailable I volunteer to be MC for one round as I came across a word the other week which immediately made me think, "Now there's one for hogwash."

I'm really flattered that everyone would like me to take over the next round, but also a bit distraught since I am really new here. I don't really feel comfortable with all the technical stuff here and will also be away for at least three days starting tonight. Perhaps next time if someone would explain the details of what I have to do then I would be game. I would really appreciate if Bingley (or anyone else) would take over the next round!

Posted By: rodward sinuosity in tables - 08/10/01 07:59 AM
The sinuosity in the tables appears to be a function of the way different browsers handle fonts for pre-formatted text. Both Netscape and Internet Explorer provide a choice of monospaced fonts for Fixed width/Plain Text but while IE appears to honour this choice in pre-formatted text, Netscape (4.75 at least - anyone tried 6.1 yet?) does not. If I have time (unlikely) I will try to find out why, or whether you need a different or additional tag or option to get Netscape to work as desired.

The lines look squiggly to me... or should that be "squidly"?

just so, rod. and for once aol (ha!) gets it right! to get netscape to work properly I had to override document specified fonts in Preferences.
