Are there other words which retain their original meaning, even when some letters are removed, like this:
FRANGIBLE = FRAGILE = FRAIL
A.W.A.D. offered this as its weekly theme during the week of Monday, Jan 31, 2000 (you can find the list in the A.W.A.D. archives down the cyber-street), beginning with catacomb = tomb. Don't think there were any trios, though, just pairs.
Don't know any triplets, but have long been intrigued by a double doublet (if that makes sense):
APPROPRIATE -> APT
APPOSITE -> APT
Alas, I rarely see apposite used anywhere. And it's such a lovely sounding word too.
cheer
the sunshine warrior
ps. DECEASED -> DEAD is an easy one
>Alas, I rarely see apposite used anywhere.
I use it all the time! But I guess that would be considered apposite, given my avocation.

Could one then posit that your vocation is words?
David,
here's one that HAS to be correct, at least part of the time: pessimist=pest.
was sent to me in an email circuit....
HABIT is a strange word.
If u remove H, ABIT remains.
If u remove A, BIT remains,
And if u remove B,IT still remains...
A recent word this week on AWAD:
Adamantine=adamant
chronist
