Anyone in for a little spring cleaning?
The word would be grough. Closing time would be March 14, results day would be March 21. It seems a rather obsolete word to me, but maybe I'm wrong and then it'll be no game.

Thanks Bran....interesting word.
How is it said?

grough....grrr uff....as in rough seas
grough....grr ooh ...as in through
grough....gr our....as in bough breaks
grough....gr off..as in feeding trough

Silly me.....its a hogword, so must be the last one wink

>as in bough breaks.. b our

this must be one of those intrusive 'r' things;
bough is pronounced here as bow /baʊ/, as in take a bow

>rather obsolete

grough has an OL index of two! < good on yer >

Or either a non-rhotic meaningless* R indication of pronunciation.

*Or at least meaningless for rhotic speakers.

Offering submitted.

I'll give it a go mate.
Posted By: tsuwm Re: grough (HOG) - 03/07/11 09:02 PM
[second thoughts..]

maybe its pronounced like grog, to rhyme with hog.

I thought perhaps it was pronounced "grow".

Curious word indeed. I'll give it a go as well.

I'm in, but it's going to take me a bit to churn up a daffynition.

I'm in, but it's going to take me a bit to churn up a daffynition. Ditto. There's one that's utterly obvious but I'm not submitting that 'cause I figure that either it'll be the right def. and be disqualified, or it'll be sent in by at least half the participants.
Posted By: BranShea Re: grough (HOG) - 03/08/11 11:45 AM
You'll never be disqualified dear, you'll just get a fair second chance grin .
(of course I'm very curious to know about the 'obvious')
Posted By: LukeJavan8 Re: grough (HOG) - 03/08/11 03:55 PM
My mind is blank so far as regards a definition, and I
don't mean a tabula rasa. So I don't see any
obvious definition myself, yet.

why don't you ask the three billy goats...
Posted By: LukeJavan8 Re: grough (HOG) - 03/08/11 05:04 PM
yuk,yuk
the Three Billy Goats Gruff, or did you have others in
mind???

Hog is alive and well. Waits for a resubmittence from maestro Faldage and could do with four more regulars or irregulars if possible.
He knows the definition does not give way to frivolous fancies at first sight, but when the going gets rough the tough get going.
So leave your crosswords and other home work and imagine! cool

Grouph....it was a tough one. Looking forward to the
daffynitions.
