The anagram game could be played with a clue. This means each player gives a clue as to what the next word will be. If the word is RECORDS then the clue for the next could be 'the colour schemes for a room.' The next player then gets the word to fit the clue which is in this example would be DECORS. The player then sets the clue for the next player, which could be "notch a point" the next player would have to find the word SCORED and then set the next clue. The difference is you work each set of words twice - once to get the word and again to set it.
I just thought of this version, which we could try out or not. The current version is fine. I don't think we should stop it. I enjoy it.

Somehow these clues seem to have been there on and off all the time. (half hidden) Don't know if structured clues will destroy the haphazard element, which I do like. And it might become like "work".

Yes that's true. I also like the wandering.

To me it seems too, that the clues have been there.
But the idea is a good one, make one think ahead for the
next move, like chess. You might pick some dead thread
somewhere and start it: or just continue here.

I also like the times where someone has challenged us to a goal, such as at Christmas time when we were trying to get to reindeers' names.

Get it started, Avy. Let's try it and see how we like it.

Okay. Let's try it. I hope wofa is okay with trying this out.

TRIAL
Clue: Nymph
(Do we or don't we give + or - or R as part of the clue? I guess the clues will become more cryptic sooner or later. )

I've looked at this @#!@ thing a dozen times and still have NO IDEA what the answer is. MORE CLUES!!!!
Posted By: Avy Re: Anagram stew with hidden clue? - 03/10/10 01:22 AM
I thought the game was discontinued, because I made a proper noun, and I realised later, that proper nouns are not allowed in anagram stews.
I do not think this game is going to work. It sounded like a good idea at the time. So I'll give out the answer in a box - just because now I know how to create one.

I think this could be a good game. Let's keep it up. The word is...

ARIAL

Clue: Winthrop educated me in the singular: I ate my words

Two clues are hidden in the above clue. In one case, the word I'm looking for is actually spelled out. The other describes the word.

Huh--I googled Winthrop but found no relation to LARIAT. ?

I would have never got lariat. Thanks Jackie. May I take this forward?

An annoying change of letter.

@ Jackie: Here are the two hidden clues-within-the-clue for changing "arial" to "lariat:"

WinthROP Educated me in the singuLAR: I ATe my words

I got two wrong anagrams before I got IRATE.

Clue: The chapter rated the most relevant was the one that made the reader fear the worst.

I >> E

RATED

Clue: Change one letter to arrive at...
"The limerick writer's inspiration (though all are not amused)"

The first phrase is a straightforward definition for the word I'm looking for; in the phrase in parentheses there is an additional, hidden clue, spelled out.

ERATO

The word is not 'rated'. I should have given the hint.

the word and its synonym is spelt out across words.

Aha! Then it is either:

I >> R

TERRA

or

I >> H

EARTH

And we'll need another clue to tell which is correct! Either way, my clues and word will still work out (which, in itself, is another clue)
