arudshield, choose one:

a) an elegant, logical, theoretical technique for cutting through cant to truth, celebrating the simplest explanation among a panoply of complexities or obfuscations, and resembling Ockham’s razor

b) micro fiber screen used for tent ventilation against aruds or 'knutten' - tiny mosquitos that normal screens will not stop; imperative for summer tent camping in Nordic countries

c) an early computer security program designed to detect and prevent attempts to access files and the information stored within

d) the element of heraldic blazonry centering the MacDuff clan coat-of-arms

e) a tentlike shelter made from animal skins

f) a face covering protecting against windburn

g) a medieval precursor of the velvet rope, used to hold back the masses when royalty was present

h) a barren hillock

i) one of three ceramic covers (a-b-c) on the external fuel tank of the newly fitted space shuttle that protect three titanium struts (which serve as rudders) from any tile or ice damage that might occur before separation

j) a crucifix used for protection against vampires

k) disingenuous posturing, as feigning indifference

hmm.

J

B made me laugh.

I like C

They're all pretty good, except for a couple which I shall keep to myself for the time being.

>we can has the perps, tsuwm?

opps [sic]...

da perps dey: ÅΓª╥┐↕§, ASp, BranShea, Faldage, Jackie, musick, olly, sjmaxq, themilum, tsuwm, and an unusual suspect

Posted By: BranShea Re: arudshield def'ns - 08/16/07 09:18 PM
Ah, the choice. As they are all very good i.e. very phony, and the real one does not distinguish itself to me from the other frauds, I'll take : a.
It's a most instructive one.
I count five words I will have to look up as soon as it's allowed
so as to get a full comprehension of the content.
Posted By: olly Re: arudshield def'ns - 08/16/07 09:27 PM
I like 'A' but something about it whispers no to me. Not very shield like perhaps.
K on the other hand is not so direct but still a type of defense. I mean, shield has got to figure in there somewhere, surely?
Posted By: BranShea Re: arudshield def'ns - 08/16/07 09:36 PM
Good laugh Olly! Everything says no to me too in a and I see the defense in K , but where's the little arud hiding ?
Posted By: olly Re: arudshield def'ns - 08/16/07 10:00 PM
Arud? sounds like some sort of windshield cleaner or cleaning product.
"Arudshield, the Drivers choice!"
Posted By: themilum Re: arudshield def'ns - 08/17/07 01:30 AM
Drat! Too late. That's the trouble with tyros they are oft times impatient and so fail to wait for the advice of the initiates.

Listen, olly and BranShea, you spin your wheels, you reason with snakes, you forget that this is Hogwash where logic is made to stand on its head. To win at Hogwash is not to vote for the most likey definition of the Hogwash word, but instead, to win is to vote for what you think the Hogmaster thinks is a clever word and definition.

And we all know that tsuwm is the Hogmaster, don't we? And we know that tsuwm as Hogmaster has selected the game definition from an "unusual" source, and also we know that he as tsuwm has submitted another definition just to mislead.

And I'll bet ten bucks that I can pick out one of the two.
Posted By: tsuwm Re: arudshield def'ns - 08/17/07 02:02 AM
>And I'll bet ten bucks that I can pick out one of the two

let's see... he's got (raw odds) two chances out of eleven on the first try, and if he misses that he's left with two chances out of ten on the second guess. that's 2/11 + 2/10 = 42/110 for about 40%, and he's laying even odds.

not much of a gamble for an "initiate" on what's nearly a coin flip.

Strange world, but no matter.

Anyway, the following information is for your personal use, dear BranShea, this information may not be used for profit or fun without the consent of the proper authorities...

The Hogmaster's definition is C

Tsuwm's trick definition is K

Your definition is B

And I submitted defintion A

They can't. They're all barren. Why they need a special word for them I don't know, but there you are.
Posted By: wofahulicodoc Re: arudshield def'ns - 08/19/07 12:38 AM
Gotta take G, on general principles. Sounds medieval, and the MacDuff clan is just too specific.

we assume, then, that this is equivalent to a vote for C ?!

or were you attempting to vote for yourself again??

Posted By: themilum Re: arudshield def'ns - 08/20/07 12:31 AM
Yes, Mister Hogmaster, my official vote was in fact C

You think me less for having voted for myself?

Has anyone personally contacted the Hogwashers who are remiss in submitting thier guesses? Maybe they are busy people, so don't be rude.
Posted By: AnnaStrophic Re: arudshield def'ns - 08/20/07 12:58 PM
And let us remember, anyone can vote. You don't have to have submitted a daffynition. Unless the rules changed along the line somewhere and I missed the memo.

I'll resurrect myself briefly to align myself with Musick (stranger things have happened ) and vote I.

Since I haven't a clue, I'll go with Fiberbabe's I.

1. A. does not miss and tell.
2. A. will have to go along with Faldage and say, "What the H?"
3. Consistencies have continued that may be gloated over later.

Not that I am known for having an impatient nature, but I'm dying to know the thruth of all this. and AnnaS' redoubtable judgement, which I know will be my definit downfall.

I can't get on that plane to visit your great country without that arudshield

Good word that "goad". Doesn't get much currency nowadays.

But while you are busy goading dear sweet AnnaS almost two dozen Hogwashers are busy waiting for the Hogwash results.
