Saw these on a truck from Idaho today:

You're driving a car

This is a neat one I saw in the grocery store parking lot yesterday:

It'll be a great day when our schools have all the money they need and the Air Force has to hold bake sales to buy a bomber.

Love it, Jackie. And I agree.

Back in the 70s or 80s there was a fad of bumper stickers placed on old heaps that said "My other car is a Porsche." One day I saw one on an old jalopy that read "My other car is a piece of s--t too."

How...uh...feel-goody, but empty of thought.
Here's one...

[Public Schooling: Money + More Money = Less Education]

Or

[The next time you need a bomber to save your
child from Muslim Terrorists; hold a bake sale]

yeah, thanks, milo.

I'm doing everything I can to save them from American terrorists...

Sorry, etaoin, I know that's true. I just think that reality is not a either/or, and that Jackie's reported bumper sticker's silly comparison diminishes the contribution that our great US Air Force makes in keeping us safe from those who wish us dead.

Good teachers are priceless.

Then there was:

SPLIT WOOD
NOT ATOMS

I always wondered if the perps of that one wanted us all to abandon our home nuclear reactors and chop down the world's forests to supply our electrical needs. At one point I got two copies of that sticker and, with a little brick and mortar cut and paste, had a bumper sticker that said:

SPLIT WOOD
AND ATOMS

good teachers are priceless.. (oh that means they (or their services are or should be free, right?)

there are problems with schools systems, but i think most who become teachers do so because of sense of vocation..

even the best paid teachers could earn more jobs i their field, child psycologists often have no more training than teachers (both have BA/MA/internships) but they are accorded more respect and better paid. and technical teachers, (maths/sciences) are certainly working as labors of love. the question is why? why do consistanly expect teachers to sacrafice?

(mind you, my ex was a teacher, i am fully aware of the waste there is.. but there is waste in the private sector, and the US Military is certainly not an example of 'waste free industry!)

we talk about valuing education.. but as a society, we don't generally put our money where our mouth is.

Many many yeasrs ago I ran for county supervisor in a new district in Fairfax County, Virginia, on a reform platform. There had been a series of zoning scandals and campaign money was coming from some very suspect sources for the real politicians.

When the ballot came out there were four names for this particular post, determined by lot (supposedly). Mine was the bottom name, so I made my campaign slogan Vote for Ted Remington, Low Man on the Vote'm Poll. And I took a currently fad bumper sticker and rearranged it to say:

Police Your Local Support.

I was 21 at the time, and very few young voters can say they were able to vote for themselves the first time they were legally allowed to cast a ballot. And I actually got an endorsement from a pundit who wrote about local politics for the Washington Post. He said something to the effect that every board needs someone who can make puns like Ted Remington can.

Your reference is to CthulHu, while the post above has only one H. I saw the Wiki thing when I was searching but it was a stretch to the context. Or so I thought.

Oh I probably just mispelled it in my original post. I'm sure it was an HP Lovecraft reference on the bumper sticker.

The other day I saw a send-up of the current proliferation of support ribbons, which started with the yellow "Support Our Troops," but has blossomed into varieties for a wide range of causes...this one, on the usual back of an SUV or family van had only a dark outline of the usual ribbon. Inside it said:

"Some asshole stole my fuckin' support magnet!"

I've always liked "Visualize Whirled Peas".
(Say it out loud if you aren't familiar with this one.)
Posted By: Alex Williams Re: bumper sticker - 07/21/06 04:01 PM
I've always understood that particular bumper sticker to be mocking those who encourage others to visualize world peace, which in my opinion is something worth visualizing. As Elvis Costello said, what's so funny about peace, love and understanding?
Posted By: TheFallibleFiend Re: bumper sticker - 07/21/06 05:30 PM

It's funny in the same way that, say, Tom Lehrer's "We are the Folk Song Army" is funny.
Posted By: Alex Williams Re: bumper sticker - 07/21/06 09:37 PM
We are the folk song army,
Every one of us cares.
We all hate poverty, war, and injustice
Unlike the rest of you squares.

There are innocuous folk songs, yeah,
But we regard 'em with scorn.
The folks who sing 'em have no social conscience,
Why, they don't even care if Jimmy Crack Corn.

If you feel dissatisfaction,
Strum your frustrations away.
Some people may prefer action,
But give me a folk song any old day.

The tune don't have to be clever,
And it don't matter if you put a couple extra syllables into a line.
It sounds more ethnic if it ain't good English
And it don't even gotta rhyme... (excuse me: rhyne!)

Remember the war against Franco?*
That's the kind where each of us belongs.
Though he may have won all the battles,
We had all the good songs!

So join in the folk song army!
Guitars are the weapons we bring
To the fight against poverty, war, and injustice.
Ready, aim, sing!

I'd say it's the difference between clever and snide.

Excellent point. I was afraid - momentarily - that I was the only fan of Tom Lehrer here.

I always felt the bumper sticker was more of a warning against being too focused, even in support of worthy causes. It's my feeling that I am in trouble when I take things too seriously.

Now that's one I like. In fact if people would use their turn signals more often it might help world peace. I agree with the general sentiment that people who plaster their cars with bumper stickers aren't really doing much more than supporting the bumper sticker industry. As Tom Lehrer said of his own politcal satire, "I don't think this kind of thing has an impact on the unconverted, frankly. It's not even preaching to the converted; it's titillating the converted." I just don't think that actively mocking world peace in particular expresses any sort of Tom Lehrerian hipness. I guess this is becoming a politcal discussion so I'll desist.

as I see it on mostly liberal thinkers cars, I think it's a clever way to get people to think about the concept of world peace. I've never seen it on a car that has (an) NRA sticker, too, e.g..
