Restarting the lyrics thread with Milo's last offering

[Spoken]
Those who dance and romance while they dance...
They seem so happy and gay;
Though they sing while they swing and they sway,
Somehow I can't feel that way.

I've been dancing with tears in my eyes,
'Cause the girl in my arms wasn't you;

Dancing with somebody new,
When it's you that my hearts calling to.

Trying to smile, once in a while,
But I find that so hard to do.

I've been dancing with tears in my eyes,
'Cause the girl in my arms wasn't you.

I'm singing Baby
I know you know
When the music's pumpin'
And the lights are low
You become someone else

I feel it burnin from my soul
It takes me higher..yeah
And baby there's no reason to control
Your hot dance with my desire

When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
when you love some one but it goes to waste
could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you.

When the lights go down in the city
And the sun shines on the bay
I want to be there in my city

So you think youíre lonely
Well my friend Iím lonely too
I want to get back to my city by the bay

Sitting on a park bench --
eyeing little girls with bad intent.
Snot running down his nose --
greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes.
Drying in the cold sun --
Watching as the frilly panties run.
Feeling like a dead duck --
spitting out pieces of his broken luck.

Sun streaking cold --
an old man wandering lonely.
Taking time
the only way he knows.
Leg hurting bad,
as he bends to pick a dog-end --
he goes down to the bog
and warms his feet.

Feeling alone --
the army's up the rode
salvation ŗ la mode and
a cup of tea.
Aqualung my friend --
don't start away uneasy
you poor old sod, you see, it's only me.
Do you still remember
December's foggy freeze --
when the ice that
clings on to your beard is
screaming agony.
And you snatch your rattling last breaths
with deep-sea-diver sounds,
and the flowers bloom like
madness in the spring.

The *sun* is a mass
of incandescent gas
a gigantic nucular furnace
where hydrogen is turned
into he-li-um
at a temprature of millions of degrees

Yo, ho! It's hot!
The sun is not
a place where we could live
But dum dum dum
dum dum dum dum
There'd be no you and me!

Songs of Science by ___, later lifted by ___

by Lou Singer and Hy Zaret, 1959

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where Hydrogen is built into Helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees

The sun is hot, the sun is not
A place where we could live
But here on Earth there'd be no life
Without the light it gives

We need its light, we need its heat
The sun light that we seek
The sun light comes from our own sun's
Atomic energy

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where Hydrogen is built into Helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees

The sun is hot...

The sun is so hot that everything on it is a gas
Aluminum, Copper, Iron, and many others

The sun is large...

If the sun were hollow, a million Earth's would fit inside
And yet, it is only a middle size star

The sun is far away...

About 93,000,000 miles away
And that's why it looks so small

But even when it's out of sight
The sun shines night and day

We need its heat, we need its light
The sun light that we seek
The sun light comes from our own sun's
Atomic energy

Scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom smashing machine
The heat and light of the sun are caused by nuclear reactions between
Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Carbon, and Helium

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where Hydrogen is built into Helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees

Tell you what I'd do
I'd go downtown and buy a Mercury or two.

Crazy bout a Mercury
Lord I'm crazy bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
And cruise it up and down the road

Well the girl I love
I stole her from a friend
He got lucky, stole her back again
She heard he had a Mercury

Lord she's crazy bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
And cruise it up and down the road

Well hey now mama
You look so fine
ridin round in your Mercury 49
Crazy bout a Mercury

Lord I'm crazy bout a Mercury
I'm gonna buy me a Mercury
And cruise it up and down the road

Well my baby went out
She didn't stay long
Bought herself a Mercury, come a cruisin home

She's crazy bout a Mercury
Yeah she's crazy bout a Mercury
And cruise it up and down the road

Baby Got Back

I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
And when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung
Wanna pull up tough
Cuz you noticed that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh, baby I wanna get with ya
And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But with that butt you got
Makes me so horny
Ooh, rumple smooth skin
You say you wanna get in my benz
Well use me use me cuz you ain't that average groupy

I've seen her dancin',
To hell with romancin'
She's sweat,
wet, got it goin like a turbo vette

I'm tired of magazines
Saying flat butts are the thing
Take the average black man and ask him that
She gotta pack much back

So Fellas (yeah) Fellas(yeah)
Has your girlfriend got the butt (hell yeah)
Tell her shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it shake that healthy butt

He's a good dog
I've had him for years
used to get up when I walked by
Now he justs lifts up his ears
and he listens when I talk to him
though he don't understand
when I talk too much he just ignores me
and goes to sleep again

He's a good dog
I got him as a pup
I tried to teach him all those tricks
But then I just gave up
cause he never acted very bright
though his eyes they've got this glow
and I actually think he knows some things that
actually I don't

And he never barks at strangers
and he never barks at cars
and he howls at the coyotes
while they're howlin' at the stars
and he scratches at the back door
'til someone lets him in
then he scratches at the other side
'cause he wants back out again.

He's a good dog
and one of these days
gonna have to drive him into town
and have him put away
'cause he don't hear that good no more
and he can't hardly walk
but until then I'll look at him
and say
he's a good dog.

Imagine you imagining that you love me
And starting on a family tree
Imagine starting on a family tree
The mama is you and the papa is me

If your heart goes bumpety-bump
It's love, love, love!
If your throat comes up with a lump
It's love, love, love!
If your knees go knockety-knock
It's love, love, love!
If you're cuckoo like the cuckoo in the clock
It's love, love, love!

Imagine you imagining a cozy flat
Complete with running dog and cat
Imagine having running dog and cat
And we will have welcome all over the mat

If your heart goes bumpety-bump
It's love, love, love!
If your throat comes up with a lump
It's love, love, love!
If your knees go knockety-knock
It's love, love, love!
If you're cuckoo like the cuckoo in the clock
It's love, love, love!

Imagine you imagining a man and wife
We'll go and buy a fork and a knife
Imagine eating with a fork and a knife
How ritzy we'll be for the rest of our life

If your heart goes bumpety-bump
It's love, love, love!
If your throat comes up with a lump
It's love, love, love!
If your knees go knockety-knock
It's love, love, love!
If you're cuckoo like the cuckoo in the clock
It's love, love, love!

What?
"If your knees go knockety-knock
If you're cuckoo like the cuckoo in the clock"
?

It's gotta be the great Guy Lombardo and his orchestra back in 1944 playing "It's Love, Love, Love"

Regrettably, they don't write lyrics like that anymore... thankfully.

Evening's a creeping vine
And our fingers are woven

And the sky is a cloth
And the moon's bright night light
Reflects off a moth

In your sad arms she comforts
Time is devout
And forever collapses to the span of a flower

And I hear you gently sigh
I wanna take you where flamingoes fly, flamingoes fly
Way over yonder in the clear blue sky
That's where flamingoes fly
Lie in the dark with the sweet sound of the nightingale
And listen for lark, and I will tell you a tale
Soft winds blowin', blowin' outside
I wanna take that moonlight ride
When I hear you gently sigh

Heavenly shades of night are falling
It's twilight time
Out of the mist your voice is calling
It's twilight time
When purple colored curtains
Mark the end of the day
I hear you my dear at twilight time

Deepening shadows gather splendor
As day is done
Fingers of night will soon surrender
The setting sun
I count the moments darling
Till you're here with me
Together at last at twilight time

Here in the after-glow of day
We keep our rendez-vous beneath the blue
Here in the sweet and same old way
I fall in love again as I did then

Deep in the dark your kiss will thrill me
Like days of old
Lighting the spark of love that fills me
With dreams untold
Each day I pray for evening just
To be with you
Together at last at twilight time

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

Money

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and you're O.K.
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team.

Money, get back
I'm alright, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class travelling set
And I think I need a Lear jet.

Money, it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that
They're giving none away, away, away.

I was all right, for a while,
I could smile, for a while
But I saw you last night,
you held my hand so tight
As you stopped, to say "Hello"
Ah you wished me well, you couldn't tell

That I'd been crying, over you,
crying, over you
Then you said "so long"
left me standing all alone
Alone and cry-ing, cry-ing, cry-ing, cry-ing
It's hard to understand, but the touch of your hand
Can start me crying

I thought that I, was over you, but it's true, oo so true
I love you even more, than I did before
but darling, what can I do
For you, don't love me, and I'll always be,

Cry-ing over you, cry-ing over you
Yes, now you're gone, and from this moment on,
I'll be crying

I thought that I was over you, but it's true, oo so true
I love you even more than I did before but darling what, can I do
For you don't love me and I'll always be

Crying over you, crying over you
Yes, now you're gone and from this moment on
I'll be crying

crying, crying, crying
Yeah crying, crying, crying over you

The trembling trees embrace the breeze,

Then you and I came wandering by,
And lost in a sigh were we.
The shore was kissed by sea and mist,
Tenderly.

I can't forget how two hearts met,
Breathlessly.
Your arms opened wide and closed me inside.
You took my lips, you took my love
So tenderly.
~
Your arms opened wide and closed me inside.
You took my lips, you took my love
So tenderly.

You took my lips, you took my love
So tenderly.

There was a Joe
Leanin' on the back door
A couple Jills with their eyes on a couple bills
Their eyes was statin'
They was waitin'
To get their hands on some easy money

They flipped a dime
One said " well, I'll take heads this time"
One stepped up
One stepped back
One loosened her shoulder strap
She couldn't speak,
Her knees got weak
She could almost taste that easy money

Take me to the action, take me to the track
Take me to a party if they're bettin' in the back
I've been working all my life, can't afford to wait
Let me call my wife so I can tell her I'll be late

I want the easy, easy money
Easy money, I could get lucky
Oh, things could go right
I want the easy, easy money
Easy money, maybe this one time
Maybe tonight

Takin Care of Business

You get up every morning
From your alarm clock's warning
Take the 8:15 into the city
There's a whistle up above
And people pushin', people shovin'
And the girls who try to look pretty

And if your train's on time
You can get to work by nine
And start your slaving job to get your pay
If you ever get annoyed
Look at me I'm self-employed
I love to work at nothing all day

And I'll be...
Taking care of business every day
Taking care of business every way
I've been taking care of business, it's all mine
Taking care of business and working overtime
Work out!

If it were easy as fishin'
You could be a musician
If you could make sounds loud or mellow
Get a second-hand guitar
Chances are you'll go far
If you get in with the right bunch of fellows

People see you having fun
Just a-lying in the sun
Tell them that you like it this way
It's the work that we avoid
And we're all self-employed
We love to work at nothing all day

In the half-tone light of a young morning
she sighs and shifts on the pillow.
And across her face dancing, the first shadows fly
to kiss the Pussy Willow.
In her fairy-tale world she's a lost soul singing
in a sad voice nobody hears.
She waits in her castle of make-believe
for her white knight to appear.
Pussy Willow down fur-lined avenue
brushing the sleep from her young woman eyes.
Runs for the train , see: eight o'clock's coming
cutting dreams down to size again.
Pussy Willow down fur-lined avenue,
brushing the sleep from her young woman eyes.
Runs from the train. Hear her typewriter humming,
cutting dreams down to size again.
She longs for the East and a pale dress flowing
an apartment in old Mayfair.
Or to fish the Spey, spinning the first run of Spring
or to die for a cause somewhere.
Pussy Willow down fur-lined avenue,
brushing the sleep from her young woman eyes.
Runs from the train. Hear her typewriter humming,
cutting dreams down to size again.

She's faced the hardest times
You could imagine
And many times her eyes fought back the tears
And when her youthful world was about to fall in
Each time her slender shoulders
Bore the weight of all her fears
And a sorrow no one hears
Still rings in midnight silence, in her ears

Let her cry, for she's a lady
Let her dream, for she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild

And if by chance I should hold her
Let me hold her for a time
But if allowed just one possession
I would pick her from the garden, to be mine

Be careful how you touch her
For she'll awaken
And sleep's the only freedom that she knows
And when you walk into her eyes
you won't believe
The way she's always paying
For a debt she never owes
And a silent wind still blows
That only she can hear and so she goes

Let her cry, for she's a lady
Let her dream, for she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild

I am a sailor and you're my first mate,
We signed on together, we coupled our fate,
We hauled up our anchor determined not to fail,
For the heart's treasure together we set sail.

With no maps to guide us we steered our own course,
We rose out the storms when the winds were gale force,
We sat out the doldrums in patience and hope,
Working together we learned how to cope.

Life is an ocean, love is a boat,
In troubled waters it keeps us afloat,
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you,
Now gathered around us we have our own crew.

Together we're in this relationship,
We've built it with care to last the whole trip,
Our true destination is not marked on any chart,
We're navigating for the shores of the heart.

Point of Know Return

I heard the men saying something
The captains tell they pay you well
And they say they need sailing men to
Show the way, and leave today
Was it you that said, "How long, how long?"

They say the sea turns so dark that
You know it's time, you see the sign
They say the point demons guard is
An ocean grave, for all the brave,
Was it you that said, "How long, how long,
How long to the point of know return?"

Your father, he said he needs you
Your mother, she says she loves you
Your brothers, they echo your words:
"How far to the point of know return?"
"Well, how long?"

Today I found a message floating
In the sea from you to me
It said that when you could see it
You cried with fear, the Point was near
Was it you that said, "How long, how long
To the Point of Know Return?"

EDIT: Pardon the excessive length of this song but I felt honor bound to give the unknown genius who wrote this version of the epic "John Henry" some currency. While what worth you might gleam from reading this song will depend on what brain you brought to the reading, I promise you a careful study will be worthwile.

"Another early version of the John Henry ballad collected by Johnson was obtained from Leon R. Harris of Moline, Ill. Mr. Harris, apparently an itinerant construction worker, claimed he first heard this version in 1909 while part of the crew building the Birmingham Power Co.'s plant at Birmingham, Alabama."

JOHN HENRY

Lissen to my story;
'Tis a story true;
'Bout a might man, --John Henry was his name,
An' John Henry was a steel-driver too--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
John Henry was a steel-driver too.

John Henry had a hammah;
Weighed nigh fo'ty poun';
Eb'ry time John made a strike
He seen his steel go 'bout two inches down,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
He seen his steel go 'bout two inches down.

John Henry's woman, Lucy,--
Dress she wore was blue;
Eyes like stars an' teeth lak-a marble stone,
An' John Henry named his hammah "Lucy" too,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
John Henry named his hammah "Lucy" too.

Lucy came to see him;
Bucket in huh han';
All th' time John Henry ate his snack,
O Lucy she'd drive steel lak-a man,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
O Lucy she'd drive steel lak-a man.

John Henry's cap'n Tommy,--
V'ginny gave him birth;
Loved John Henry like his only son,
And Cap' Tommy was the whitest man on earth,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
Cap' Tommy was th' whitest man on earth.

One day Cap' Tommy told him
How he'd bet a man;
Bet John Henry'd beat a steam-drill down,
Jes' cause he was th' best in th' lan',--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
'Cause he was th' best in th' lan.

John Henry tol' Cap' Tommy;
Lightnin' in his eye;
"Cap'n, bet yo' las' red cent on me,
Fo' I'll beat it to th' bottom or I'll die,-
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
I'll beat it to th' bottom or I'll die."

"Co'n pone's in my stomach;
Hammah's in my han';
Haint no steam-drill on dis railroad job
Can beat 'Lucy' an' her steel-drivin' man,
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
Can beat 'Lucy' an' her steel-drivin' man."

"Bells ring on de engines;
Runnin' down th' line;
Dinnahs done when Lucy pulls th' c'od;
But no hammah in this mountain rings like mine,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
No hammah in this mountain rings like mine."

Sun shined hot an' burning'
Wer'n't no breeze at-tall;
Sweat ran down like watah down a hill
That day John Henry let his hammah fall,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
That day John Henry let his hammah fall.

John Henry kissed his hammah;
White Man turned on steam;
Li'l Bill held John Henry's trusty steel,--
'Twas th' biggest race th' worl' had ever seen,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
Th' biggest race th' worl' had ever seen.

White Man tol' John Henry,--
"Niggah, dam yo' soul,
You might beat dis steam an' drill o' mine
When th' rocks in this mountain turn to gol',--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
When th' rocks in this mountain turn to gol'."

John Henry tol' th' white man;
Tol' him kind-a sad:
"Cap'n George I want-a be yo' fr'en;
If I beat yo' to th' bottom, don't git mad,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
If I beat yo' to th' bottom don't git mad."

Cap' Tommy sees John Henry's
Steel a-bitin' in;
Cap'n slaps John Henry on th' back,
Says, "I'll give yo' fifty dollars if yo' win,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
I'll give yo' fifty dollars if yo' win."

White Man saw John Henry's
Steel a-goin' down;
White Man says,--"That man's a mighty man,
But he'll weaken when th' hardes' rock is foun',--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
He'll weaken when th' hardes' rock is foun'."

John Henry, O John Henry,--
John Henry's hammah too;
When a woman's 'pendin' on a man
Haint no tellin' what a might man can do,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
No tellin' what a mighty man can do.

John Henry, O, John Henry!
Blood am runnin' red!
Falls right down with his hammah to th' groun',
Says, "I've beat him to th' bottom but I'm dead,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
I've beat him to th' bottom but I'm dead."

John Henry kissed his hammah;
Kissed it with a groan;
Sighed a sigh an' closed his weary eyes,
Now po' Lucy has no man to call huh own,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
Po' Lucy has no man to call huh own.

Cap' Tommy came a-runnin'
To John Henry's side;
Says, "Lawd, Lawd,--O Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawd,--
He's beat it to th' bottom but he's died,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
He's beat it to th' bottom but he's died."

Lucy ran to see him;
Dress she wore was blue;
Started down th' track an' she nevvah did turn back,
Sayin', "John Henry, I'll be true--true to you,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
John Henry, I'll be true--true to you."

John Henry, O, John Henry!
Sing it if yo' can,--
High an' low an' ev'ry where yo' go,--
He died with his hammah in his han',--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
He died with his hammah in his han'.

Buddie, where'd yo' come from
To this railroad job?
If yo' wantta be a good steel-drivin' man,
Put yo' trus' in yo' hammah an' yo' God,--
Lawd, -- Lawd, --
Put yo' trus' in yo' hammah an' yo God.

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground came a bubblin' crude.

Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

Well the first thing you know ol' Jed's a millionaire,
Kinfolk said Jed move away from there
Said Californy is the place you ought to be
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.

Hills, that is.
Swimmin pools, movie stars.

So I say it's up to us to straighten
Out this mess...
We got to go through hell...
And then that's the last of this
Miserable test...

Black must be bold
Because it's gold and true
Kings of this world...
So let them go to the moon.
Yes let them go to mars.
Because deep down inside
They're really from the stars.

That's why they don't want
Us to mix...just the way
The word of God had said.
So let them go to saturn...that's
Where they'll learn instead.
Because black and white
Together is right...
And white by itself is
An egotistic elf....

People of the earth can you hear me
Came a voice from the sky on that magical night
And in the colors of a thousand sunsets
They traveled to the world on a silvery light

The people of the earth stood waiting
Watching as the ships came one by one
Setting fire to the sky as they landed
Carrying to the world children of the sun, children of the sun

I don't hate my parents
I don't get drunk just to spite 'em
I've got my own reasons to drink now -
Think I'll call my dad up and invite 'im.
I can sleep till noon any time I want
But there's not many days that I do
I gotta get up and take on that world
When you're an adult, it's not a cliche, it's the truth

I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I got the problems of an adult
on my head and on my shoulders
I'm an adult now

I can't look at young girls anymore
People would think I'm some kind of pervert
Adults find sex either boring or dirty
Young people get away with murder
I can't write songs about girls anymore
I have to write songs about women
No more "boy meets girl, boy loses girl"
Now it's more like "man tries to figure out what the hell went wrong"

I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I've got the problems of an adult on my head and my libido
I'm an adult now

I can't listen to rock and roll anymore
I mean, I like the music, but I can't stand the racket
All that screaming, screaming, screaming
Some guy screaming in a leather jacket.
I can't take drugs anymore
I can't afford any artificial joy
I'd sure look like a fool lying dead in a ditch somewhere
With my head full of chemicals like some cheese-eating high school boy

I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I've got the problems of an adult
on my head and on my shoulders

Why must every generation think their folks are square
And no matter where their heads are they know momís aunt there?
Cause I swore when I was small that Iíd remember when
I knew whatís wrong with them that I was smaller then

Determined to remember all the cardinal rules
Like sun showers are legal grounds for cutting school I know I have forgotten maybe one or two
And I hope that I recall them all before the babyís due
And I know heíll have a question or two

Like "hey Pop, can I go ride my zoom
It goes two hundred miles an hour suspended by balloons
And can I put a droplet of this new stuff on my tongue
And imagine frothing dragons while you sit and wreck your lungs"
And I must be permissive, understanding of the younger generation

Then Iíll know that all Iíve learned my kid assumes
And all my deepest worries must be his cartoons
And still Iíll try to them him all the things Iíve done
Related to what he can do when he becomes a man
And still heíll stick his fingers in the fan

And "Hey, Pop, my girlfriendís only three
Sheís got her own videophone and sheís taking L.S.D.
And now that weíre best friends she wants to give a bit to me
But whatís the matter Daddy, how come youíre turning green?
Can it be that you canít live up to your dream?"

Ninety-nine red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
As ninety-nine red balloons go by

Iíve been working on the railroad,
all the live-long day.
Iíve been working on the railroad,
to pass the time away.

Canít you hear the whistle blowing,
Wake up so early in the morn.
Can you here the whistle blowing,
Dinah, blow your horn.

Dinah, wonít you blow
Dinah, wonít you blow
Dinah, wonít you blow, your horn, your horn.

Dinah, wonít you blow
Dinah, wonít you blow
Dinah, wonít you blow your horn.

Thereís someone in the kitchen with Dinah,
Thereís someone in the kitchen I know, I know.
Thereís someone in the kitchen with Dinah,

Strumming, strumming.
Heís strumming on the o-ole banjo, banjo.
Stumming, strumming.

Island Of Souls

Billy was born within sight of the shipyard
First son of a riveter's son
And Billy was raised as the ship grew a shadow
Her great hull would blot out the light of the sun

And six days a week he would watch his poor father
A working man live like a slave
He'd drink every night and he'd dream of a future,
Of money he never would save
And Billy would cry when he thought of the future

Soon came a day when the bottle was broken
They launched the great ship out to sea
He felt he'd been left on a desolate shore
To a future he desperately wanted to flee
What else was there for a shipbuilder's son
A new ship to be built, new work to be done

One day he dreamed of the ship in the world
It would carry his father and he
To a place they would never be found
To a place far away from this town.

Trapped in the cage of the skeleton ship
All the workmen suspended like flies
Caught in the flare of acetylene light
A working man works till the industry dies
And Billy would cry when he thought if the future

Then what they call an industrial accident
Crushed those it couldn't forgive
They brought Billy's father back home in an ambulance
A brass watch, a cheque, maybe three weeks to live,
And what else was there for a riveter's son
A new ship to be built, new work to be done

That night, he dreamed of the ship in the world
It would carry his father and he
To a place they could never be found
To a place far away from this town,
A Newcastle ship without coals
They would sail to the island of souls.

The Girl from Ipanema

Tall and tan and young and lovely
the girl from Ipanema goes walking
and when she passes each one she passes goes ďahhĒ.

When she walks sheís like a samba
that swings so cool and sways so gentle
that when she passes each one she passes goes ďahhĒ.

Chorus:
Oh, but he watches so sadly.
How can he tell her he loves her?
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
but each day when she walks to the sea
she looks straight ahead, not at he.

Tall and tan and young and lovely
the girl from Ipanema goes walking
and when she passes he smiles, but she doesnít see.

Walkin' down the street swingin' their hips
Splitting up a bag of potato chips
And three cool cats did three big flips for
Three cool chicks

Well, the first cool cat
He said, "Man, look at that!
Man, do you see what I see?"
"I want this little chick!"

Where the earth shows its bones of wind-broken stones
and the sea and the sky are one
I'm caught out of time, my blood sings with wine
and I'm running naked in the sun
There's God in the trees , I'm weak in the knees and the sky is a painful blue
I'd like to look around, but, honey, all I see is you.

Well, the summer city lights will soften the nights
till you'd think that the air was clear
and I'm sitting with friends where forty-five cents
will buy another glass of beer
He's got something to say, but I'm so far away
that I don't know who I'm talking to
Cause you just walked in the door, and honey, all I see is you.

And I just want to hold you closer than I've ever held anyone before
You say you've been twice a wife and you're through with life
but, honey, what the hell's it for?
After twenty-three years you'd think I could find a way to let you know somehow
That I want to see your smiling face forty-five years from now.

Now alone in the lights on stage every night
I've been reaching out to find a friend
Who knows all the words, sings so she's heard
and knows how all the stories end.
Maybe after the show she'll ask me to go
home with her for a drink or two
Now her smile lights her eyes, but, honey, all I see is you.

And I just want to hold you closer than I've ever held anyone before
You say you've been twice a wife and you're through with life
but, honey, what the hell's it for?
After twenty-three years you'd think I could find a way to let you know somehow
That I want to see your smiling face forty-five years from now.

When I was younger man
I hadn't a care
Foolin' around
Hitting the town
Growin' my hair
You came along and stole my heart
When you entered my life
Ooh, babe, you got what it takes
So I made you my wife

Since then I never looked back
It's almost like livin' a dream
And oooooooh, I love you

You came along from far away
And found me here
I was playin' around
Feelin' down
Hittin' the beer
You picked me up
From off the floor
And gave me a smile
You said you're much too young
Your life ain't begun
Let's walk for awhile

And as my head was spinnin' 'round
I gazed into your eyes
And thought
Oooooooh, I want you

Thank you babe for being a friend
And shinin' your light in my life
'Cause ooooooh
I need you

As my head was comin' round
I gazed into your eyes
And thought
Ooooooh, I want you

Thanks again for being my friend
And straightenin' out my life
'cause oooooooh
I need you

Since then I never looked back
It's almost like livin' a dream
Ooooooh, I got you

If ever a man had it all
It would have to be me
And ooooooh, I love you

No offence, Maverick, I mean, I like David Bowie and all, but let's face it...that damn beep-beep song didn't have any meaning at all!

Now here's a song with import!

[Very slowly]
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep
While riding in my Cadillac
What to my surprise
A little Nash Rambler was following me
About one third my size
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

[Slowly]
I pushed my foot down to the floor
To give the guy the shake
But the little Nash Rambler stayed right behind
He still had on his brake
He musta thought his car had more guts
As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep)
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

[Normal speed]
My car went into passing gear
And we took off with gust (whoosh)
Soon we were going ninety
Musta left him in the dust
When I peeked in the mirror of my car
I couldn't believe my eyes
The little Nash Rambler was right behind
You'd think that guy could fly
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

[Quickly]
Now we were doing a hundred and ten
This certainly was a race
For a Rambler to pass a Caddy
Would be a big disgrace
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep)
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

[Very quickly]
Now we're going a hundred twenty
As fast as I can go
The Rambler pulled along side of me
As if we were going slow
The fella rolled down his window
And yelled for me to hear
"Hey buddy how do I get this car outa second gear?"

Beep-Beep

Notice how the lyrics speed up when the cars go faster?
Now, that's Art! Of course, it helps if you know what a "Nash Rambler" is. But if you don't...well, that's life.

While we float on this mortal sea
We wear our colours so heroically
We're only living on GMT
Everyone else is just a refugee
Ah I wake up, I'll take up
It's about time for a shake up
When pride is blind you know
We're only stuck in second gear
So wrap up, never give up
It's about time to deliver
Without the man who drives you ... (?)

Refugee

We got somethin', we both know it,
We don't talk too much about it.
Ain't no real big secret all the same,
somehow, we get around it.

It don't really matter to me, baby,
You believe what you want to believe,
You don't have to live like a refugee.
(Don't have to live like a refugee)

Somewhere, somehow,
Somebody must have kicked you around some.
Tell me why you wanna lay there and revel in your abandon.

It don't make no difference to me, baby,
Everybody's had to fight to be free,
You see you don't have to live like a refugee.
(Don't have to live like a refugee)

Baby, we ain't the first.
I'm sure a lot of other lovers been burned.
Right now this seems real to you,
But it's one of those things you gotta feel to be true.

Somewhere, somehow,
Somebody must have kicked you around some.
Who knows? Maybe you were kidnapped,
Tied up, taken away, and held for ransom.

It don't really matter to me, baby,
Everybody's had to fight to be free,
You see you don't have to live like a refugee.

And it donít matter to me
If you take up with someone
Whoís better than me
ícause your happiness is all I want
For you to find peace your piece of mind...

Peace Of Mind

Now, if you're feeling kinda low 'bout the dues you've been paying;
Futures coming much too slow,
And you wanna run but somehow you just keep on staying,
Can't decide on which way to go.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Chorus :-
I understand about indecision,
But I don't care if I get behind.
People living in competition;
All I want is to have my peace of mind.
Yeah.
O-o-oh.

Now you're climbing to the top of the company ladder,
Hope it doesn't take to long.
Can't you see there'll come a day when it won't matter,
Come a day when you'll be gone.

Chorus

Take a look ahead.
Take a look ahead.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Now everybody's got advice they just keep on giving.
Doesn't mean too much to me.
Lots of people have to make-believe they're living,
Can't decide who they should be.

Chorus

Take a look ahead.
Take a look ahead.
Look ahead.

Been so long
My light don't burn bright no mo'

Where in the world did...my baby go.

coffee and a roll, hash browns over easy
chile in a bowl with burgers and fries

2 for a quarter, dime for a dance
with Woolworth rhinestone diamond earrings,
and a sideway's glance

This Masquerade

Are we really happy with this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say
Searching but not finding understanding anyway
We're lost in this masquerade

Both afraid to say we're just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play

Thoughts of leaving disappear
every time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reason why
we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade

We could just start over
but it's oh so hard to do
When you're lost in a masquerade

I hear your name whispered on the wind
It's a sound that makes me cry
I hear a song blow again and again
Through my mind and I don't know why
I wish I didn't feel so strong about you
Like happiness and love revolve around you

Trying to catch your heart
Is like trying to catch a star
So many people love you baby
That must be what you are

Waiting for a star to fall
And carry your heart into my arms
That's where you belong
In my arms baby, yeah

I've learned to feel what I cannot see
But with you I lose that vision
I don't know how to dream your dream
So I'm all caught up in superstition
I want to reach out and pull you to me
Who says I should let a wild one go free

Trying to catch your heart
Is like trying to catch a star
But I can't love you this much baby
And love you from this far

In Your Eyes

Accepting all Iíve done and said
I want to stand and stare again
Til thereís nothing left out, oh
It remains there in your eyes
Whatever comes and goes
I will hear your silent call
I will touch this tender wall
Til I know Iím home again
Ooh

In your eyes (in your eyes)
In your eyes (in your eyes)
In your eyes (in your eyes)
In your eyes

Love I get so lost, sometimes
Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away
I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are

And all my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway (in your eyes) to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution (in your eyes) of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes

In your eyes
In your eyes

Love, I donít like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

And all my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway (in your eyes) to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution (in your eyes) of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes

In your eyes

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waiting for a train
Feeling nearly faded as my jeans
Bobby flagged a diesel down just before it rained
Took us all the way to New Orleans
Well I took my harp on out of my dirty red bandana
Blowin' sad while Bobby sang the blues
Windshield wipers slapping time
Holding Bobby's hand in mine
We finallly sang near every song that driver knew

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose
Freedom ain't worth nothing but it's free
Feeling good was easy Lord when Bobby sang the blues
Feeling good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

From the coal mines of Kentucky to the California sun
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Standing right beside me Lord in everything I done
Bobby's body kept me from the cold
Then somewhere near Salinas, Lord I let her slip her away
Looking for that home I hope she'll find
And I'll trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday
To be holding Bobby's body close to mine

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose
Freedom ain't worth nothing but it's free
Feeling good was easy Lord when Bobby sang the blues
Feeling good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

So oh Lord, wonít you buy me a color TV ?

Oh Lord, wonít you buy me a night on the town ?
Iím counting on you, Lord, please donít let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, wonít you buy me a night on the town ?

And friends, somewhere in Washington enshrined in some little folder, is a
study in black and white of my fingerprints. And the only reason I'm
singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar
situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a
situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into
the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get
anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if
one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and
they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said
fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and
walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement.

And that's what it is , the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and
all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it come's around on the
guitar.

with a fast picking hand,
but my brother,
my brother, like my mother,
they're living back,
in the dead head fad,
well don't be sad,
they may be upgly,
but they're not that bad,
their only faulter is that they hate water,
and water is something you gotta have,
hippies hate water,

one day I found,
myself driving, myself around,
and then I saw 'em,
like a herd sheep callin',
"Gimme a ride to the Dead show man",
well don't be sad,

*It's a thin line between love and hate
It's a thin line between love and hate

It's five o'clock in the morning
And you're just getting in
A knock upon the door
A voice sweet and low says
(who is it?)
She opens up the door
And she lets you in
And never once does she say
"where have you been?"

She says,"Hold it,
Are you hungry, did you eat yet,
Let me hang up your coat now"
And all the time she's smiling
Never raises her voice
It's five o'clock in the morning
And you dn't give it a second thought

(*Repeat)

The sweetest woman in the world
Could be the meanest woman in the world
If you make her be that way
She might be holding something in
That's really gonna hurt you
One of these fine days

There you are in the hospital
Bandaged from foot to head
In a state of shock
That much from bein' dead
You didn't think your woman
Could do something like that to you
You didn't think she'd got the nerve
Accidents speak louder than words
Louder than words
Louder than words
Louder than words,come on

Come on,baby,baby
If you won't give a damn about me
Come on baby,bay
You don't really care about me

Hear what I say
Hear what I say

You talk like Marlene Dietrich
And you dance like Zizi Jeanmaire
Your clothes are all made by Balmain
And there`s diamonds and pearls in your hair
You live in a fancy appartment
Of the Boulevard of St. Michel
Where you keep your Rolling Stones records
And a friend of Sacha Distel
But where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
Tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head

A Little Priest from Sweeney Todd

TODD: (spoken) These are desperate times,
Mrs. Lovett, and desperate measures are called for!
LOVETT: Here we are, now! Hot out of the oven!
TODD: What is that?

LOVETT:
It's priest. Have a little priest.
TODD:
Is it really good?
LOVETT:
Sir, it's too good, at least!
Then again, they don't commit sins of the flesh,
So it's pretty fresh.
TODD:
Awful lot of fat.
LOVETT:
Only where it sat.
TODD:
Haven't you got poet, or something like that?
LOVETT:
No, y'see, the trouble with poet is
'Ow do you know it's deceased?
Try the priest!

TODD: (spoken) Heavenly!
Not as hearty as bishop, perhaps,
but then again, not as bland as curate, either!

LOVETT:
And good for business, too -- always leaves you wantin' more!
Trouble is, we only get it on Sundays!

Shipped far north as a whalin' sailor.

Bound away to Iceland cold,
Found much ice but not much gold.

Greenland is a cold country,
Not the place for you and me.

We caught some whales an' boiled their blubber,
Oil an' fat choked every scupper.

We'll soon be homeward bound to Scotland,
Homeward bound to Bonnie Scotland.

I'll be glad when I get hame,

I'm sitting in the railway station.
Got a ticket for my destination.
On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand.
And ev'ry stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band.
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.
Ev'ry day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines.
And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories
And ev'ry stranger's face I see reminds me that I long to be,
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

Tonight I'll sing my songs again,
I'll play the game and pretend.
But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me.
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.
Silently for me.

Someday,
When I'm awfuly low
When the world is cold
I will feel a glow just thinking of you
And the way you look, tonight

Oh but you're Lovely
With you smile so warm
And your cheek so soft
There is nothing for me but to love you [all]
Just the way you look, tonight

With each word you tenderness grows
Tearing my fear apart
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose
Touches my foolish heart

Love me,
Never ever change
Keep that breathless charm
Won't you please arrange it
'Cause I love , you [all]
Just the way you look, tonight

I don't hear a word they're saying
Only the echoes of my mind

People stopping - staring
I can't see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes

Thru' the pouring rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Backing off of the North East wind

Sailing

It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me

It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
