This is what I was trying to look up in Quinion. I hate to show such ignorance, but what, exactly, does this word signify, and where did it come from?
independent, outside the mainstream.
Indie - the famous auto races?
I know the term in the context of independent record labels.
I've also heard it referring to independent film producers.
There are some West ones I hear. Think they play cricket.

It's what Sean Connery(father) called Harrison Ford (son) in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"
Actually he resisted calling him Indiana (or Indy) for most of the film -- "We named the DOG Indiana!" He prefered to refer to his son as Junior -- "[pointing to himself] Henry Jones... [pointing to Indiana]...Junior."

...for most of the film...
Does this mean he *did at least once?
To me the word implies independent, especially a small record label or movie production studio, or the products thereof: an indie band, an indie film.
to musick
yes, right at the end of the film just before riding off into the sunset.
Indie: What undies may be called after a really SERIOUS wedgie.
Or: The thong is ended, but the malady lingers on.
Haaaaaaaaaaaa! Oh, 'tis very, very good to have you back, Ted!
A very serious wedgie--this will take me downstairs now!
>The thong is ended
You know TEd, given how much this place is enriched by your presence, why not combine tasks - child-rearing and AWADtalk, by signing up your progeny? From all that I have heard of your loinal fruit, AWADtalk would be the better for the addition.

Ack--ack--I can't even put it; too...too...picturesque!
