I've lived in both Malaysia and Indonesia and ever since 1971 I've wondered if their word for husband, suami (pronunciation the same as swami) was etymologically related to swami. My Tamil friends in Malaysia thought there may have been a connection but really didn't know.

There does appear to be a connection. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, both "swami" and "husband" are associated with the idea of "master".
