Does anyone in this group know of a word for quotes that "everyone knows" but were never said. E.g., "Me Tarzan, you Jane," or "Play it again, Sam"?
Thank you
another: "Beam me up, Scotty", of course.
"Shaken, not stirred" and they are said often by many. So far all movie quotes.
"Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him well."
"Abandon hope all ye who enter here" (not at all what Milton wrote!)
The only word I know which describes this is 'misquotation'
Another popular Shalespearian misquote is fomr 'The Scottish Play' - "Lead on, Macduff."
