So what is the difference between videlicet and id est?

Four letters, but seriously, they are pretty much synonymous, though in Latin id est (i.e.) means literally 'it is' while videlicet (viz.) means 'it is permitted to see'.

adverb: That is; namely; to wit. (used to introduce examples or details).

Sounds kind of like it's bridging the gap between i.e. and e.g.

I can't help reading videlict when I see it. I'd better never try to use it.
