What's a good word, phrase, or expression to describe the natural cycle that sometimes there's a lot of activity in a certain place while sometimes there's very little activity.

I thought of "high-tides low-tides" but I'm sure there's a better one... Help would be appreciated

"feast or famine"

or

"when it rains, it pours"

Ah great. Through "up and downs" I've found enough synonyms to last a lifetime! I like "teeter-tottering"... well, great job as usual. Someone outta give this forum a reward for something
