wintery looks wrong.

So does wintry. AHD3 accepts wintery as a variant of wintry, so my advice is don't worry. And stay away from brumal if you want to be understood by hoi polloi.

It occurs to me to wonder how the ancients could have told
which day of the year was the shortest.

My dictionary gives "brume" (rare) fog,mist, vapor
Should be a dandy poetic word. "the fumes and brumes of smoke filled rooms......"

Oh good now I have a name for the color of my living/room dining room.. i had a custom color blended,from a sample in pantone book- blue vapor is the pantone name but brume grey is better.. it is the color of fog.. and like fog it is fluid-- the color changed depending upon the light, from blue, to grey to even a pale sage green shade..
