There is another specific use of this term in wine making. It means adding water and sugar to the grape juice before it is fermented. This has two affects; in high acid juice, it 'makes it better' by diluting the acid. The second is to 'stretch the juice and make more wine (inferior because the taste is diluted too) out of limited juice.

This amelioration is also practised in other food branches. In factory produced bread they add an ameliorator consisting of extra yeast, gluten, milk powder, fats, an amino acid 'cystine' made from pigs hear (pardons, hair) and preservatives. I've seen the stuff as a yellow buttery matter. Keeps the bread supple and so called fresh, but spunkless.
Just like in wine, you might consider the ameliorator a detoriorator.

welcome

"Welcome Jeff "

As already mentioned ( without the Jeff but with the same intention)
Posted By: LukeJavan8 Re: ameliorate - 09/27/12 05:13 PM
And do you have a monopoly on welcoming new people?
Your arrogance is improving.
I've been welcoming people since I first joined.
Sorry if it upsets you, but you can put me on
ignore.

I just see no point in repetitions Luke. I'll leave it to you if that's what you like.
Posted By: Rhubarb Commando Re: ameliorate - 09/28/12 11:15 AM
Now, now children! Play nicely together, or you shall have no biscuits!
Posted By: BranShea Re: ameliorate - 09/28/12 01:27 PM
Could I swap your biscuit with a glass of untampered with wine and a piece of clean bread please?

You know what they say about opinions?
Like I'm the first one to do it? Several times many people
welcome a new poster. You mind your business, I'll mind mine.

No point in getting a biscuit today when you can't have jam till tomorrow. If you'd gotten a biscuit yesterday you could have had it with yesterday's jam.

I hope jenny jenny feels ameliorated by your reply Faldo smile

And Bran...surely we can all welcome new comers, if we want to. Its a nice thing to do.
Posted By: BranShea Re: ameliorate - 09/29/12 12:16 PM
Naturally. As I made a reply post to Jeff ( excuse the commotion on your thread Jeff) I thought it polite to add a welcome. I do not go around the board to do welcomes unless I try to make a contribution at the same time. (for what it's worth). Since when do we not have opinions?

The irritation was mostly about the useless quote. (?)
Irritation on top a recently taken out of context part of a private message. I regard PM's as strictly private not as public messages.

That said, Jenny Jenny, you can have hairless cookies and eat them too, even if you don't play nicely. grin

This thread is not in the pm section.(Yes, excuse the commotion
on your thread,Jeff, since my harmless welcome has upset the
resident site police.) Hence your comment was
not a private message. If you wanted to make it to Jeff why
not send a PM, not post it in this thread?
Use of a smilie is done all the time without any
comment which YOU might consider "worthwhile".
Again, who made you Awad police deciding who is and who
is not "breaking the rules". And where are the standards
posted as to what is worthwhile and what is worthless according
to you?
I can find a lot of your comments simply "useless" as
well. And what I said about 'opinions' still stands.

Oh, for goodness sake, you two!!! Knock it off, will you?
We had a flame war nine years ago whjich came close to wrecking the board (and caused the defection of some of the brightest and most amusing members) We don't want that to ahpen again.
You are both right whilst at the same time being, both of you, wrong.
I tried to take the heat out of this squabble a few posts ago.
Be warned! if you don't behave yourselves, I shall set Jackie on to you!!! THEN you'll be sorry!) laugh

Come now Rhuby, you know she won't do anything.
I've tried before as well, and she would do nothing.
I've been castigated before and told to get thicker
skin, I don't flee anymore. So now I am on ignore
and recommend that form of resolution.

I'm scared of Jackie crazy

Did anyone notice a link to 'twitter' on this page. Is that new or am I just seeing it now? (I dont twitter, by the way).

If I upset someone because I felt upset myself then I apologize because I want to ameliorate this situation and wish you all a good Sunday.
Posted By: Rhubarb Commando Re: ameliorate - 09/30/12 09:56 AM
OK - you can both have your biscuits at tea time! And thank you both.

(And you shall have a biscuit, too jj!)

Will they keep till tomorrow?
Posted By: Rhubarb Commando Re: ameliorate - 09/30/12 11:00 AM
