In searching for something else, I found this:
"
LIBER m Roman Mythology
Pronounced: LIE-bur
Derived from Latin liber meaning "free". This was the name of a Roman fertility god.

So how did "liber" get to mean "book"?

Different words, Dr Bill. Liber, free is with a long i; liber, book is with a short i.
