Don't know if memorial lasts all week long or is everyone just busy in the garden or maybe closing off the teaching season.
Maybe some still find time to do this little butterfly poll?
Do you have any butterflies coming near the house this year? This is my little list:

Butterflies around the house.(city area)
*Pieris brassica ------- Cabbage white (common)
*Celastrina argiolus -- Holly blue (less common)
*Nymphális io--------- Peacock (common)
*Nymphális urticae--- Small tortoise shell (common)
*Vanéssa atalanta --- Red admiral (less common)

1) Memorial Day is just one day (always the last Monday in May), but some people do go out of town for the long weekend. We had our picnic on Sunday, and the weather was grand!
2) In my part of the US (it varies greatly), the school year goes until June 20-something every year.
3) The WAD words have been yawners all week - scrannel?
4) I haven't check the butterflies, but I know we have Cabbage Whites and probably the tortoise shell ones. We also get Monarchs (love those!) and lots that nobody pays any attention. We also get Luna moths, and they are big suckers! They're only out at night, though. Not any that are really blue.

Brought up the butterflies, cause we had a butterfly report - weekend. The five I came up with is what's left for where I live. I remember others from childhood, next to where the polders started in Rotterdam. Little yellow ones and whites with a tip of orange.
Mountain areas have far larger varieties, but Holland has only three things that with great effort might bear the name of "hillock".

Nice bird! Nice background color!

Thank you! That is the best photo I've ever taken of one of my favorite birds, the American Bluebird. It is our state bird (New York), and not often seen, much less spotted sitting on the bird feeder hook on one's deck! I took it last fall, hence the lovely fall foliage in the background... :0)

This looks like another 'almost expired' discussion.
But I'll add my two bits like I seem to be doing everywhere
on this site, with not too many replies. But I love those I do
get.

I sure do. I have a yard full of things to attract the little creatures. My favorite are the Monarchs who make their
3000 to 5000 mile trek to Mexico each autumn to mate in the
mountains of that country, and are now endangered by logging.
I plant milkweed which is their favorite food, laying eggson
it. Then come the caterpillars. Then the chrysalis's here in
Nebraska as well.
In the autumn I go to the Platte River (source of the name
Nebraska) and watch them migrate south. For two or three days
I watch, as I do other things. One at a time flies down the
river, being blown by south winds back north, it seems, more
than they get south: three stops forward, and two back.
All the way to Mexico. Amazing.

I first heard about the monarch migration to Mexico from Lucy, the Peanuts character. It was at a time when she was bloviating about almost anything, making up wild stories about all kinds of things.

I have two bushes, called "butterfly bushes" on order at a local
nursery, two different colored flowers. The honeybees love them too
and with problem we have had with honeybees, the more the merrier. Especially here in the Great Plains.
