A friend sent me this URL, which you may find a bit interesting. http://www.bookcrossing.com/homeBasically, this is an interesting way to cause further circulation of books you have read but choose not to retain in your personal library. My problem is that there are very few books that I choose not to keep, and those that I get rid of are so horrendously bad that I could not consign them to this laudable sharing scheme. Some of you, though, may find it an interesting way to share with others. TEd PS I have no idea what happened to my previous post, but I went in to edit it slightly and it disappeared.

This is a nice friendly place. I have sent off several paperbacks and even one hardcover which I knew was good,(I own a copy) and when I saw a cheap remaindered copy I bought and freed it! At our library there is a rack of used paperbacks priced at 25 cents each and if I see a good one I will spend the quarter and free the poor neglected thing. There are folks who read Book Crossing lists regularly and go "hunting" books that are in the wild. And don't limit yourself to adult books ... children's books are great to free at your local shelter. Do give it a look. It's *FUN*.
The fact that it makes you feel good is just a bonus.

I haven't looked at the site for a while but I'm pretty sre that you can "free" books here. I ordered a copy of Sophie's World the other day, forgetting that I already had a copy. I'm thinking about finding a suitable spot in Edinburgh, so that I can release it into the wild. Any suggestions for the type of place where I should leave it?

Ok, let me see if I've got this right--this is such an amazing idea that I am still incredulous: you have in your possession a book, preferably one you like. You sign in to this bookcrossing site, and they send you a label to put in your book (presumably one you print out?). You put the label in, then leave the book in some public place and hope that whoever picks it up will also contact the site?
Jo, I saw that one person had left a book in a Ladies' room. That doesn't sound particularly appetizing to me, somehow. What about a Dr.'s office? :-)
